The holiday season can be so hectic. However, I know that God wants me to be spending time preparing my heart and helping my family do the same so that we can celebrate Christ’s birth on Christmas. Advent is a time of anticipation and a great time for prayer and service. What better way than to pick up an Advent devotional (or more!) to help guide you as you grow closer to God.
I recently was checking out Amazon for ideas and thought I’d share what I found there as well as other resources I have used or plan to use in our home. After all, the next few days are the perfect time for ordering anything you plan to use during Advent.(Note ~ links to most of the products are affiliate links. Any purchase through them results in a small commission to help me run the blog.)
This year I am planning to incorporate ideas from Celebrate Jesus: An Advent Resource for Families by Bow of Bronze. At only $4.99 for the ebook, it is a low cost option for Christian families. Homeschooling families will love the copywork pages to give the kids practice with handwriting while meditating upon Scripture. And, you directly help keep one Christian homeschool mom’s ministry in place by your purchase. Look for a review of this product soon!
A while back, I was blessed with the opportunity to review Christ Centered Christmas by Hal and Melanie Young. This is a wonderful resource to help families keep their eye on what is important during the holiday season. While it isn’t a devotional like others in this post, you will find lots of ideas to incorporate in your family’s time together this year. The Christ Centered Christmas ebook is currently on sale for $5.
At only $1.25 with prime shipping, Sacred Space for Advent and the Christmas Season 2013 – 2014 looked like a great small book to have on hand this year. I love having something for me and something else to do with the family. And, I’m very curious to see what the Irish Jesuits have come up with. If I like this title, I’ll be investing in some of the 2014 ones as well.
I love so many of the works by Max Lucado and I suspect this is an awesome devotional for Christians to use during Advent. He has 30 days of devotions to help you prepare your heart. It is available in Kindle Format for $1.99 or in paperback for $2.99 on Amazon.
I have longed to make a Jesse Tree with the family for years. I think THIS is the year we’ll incorporate that activity as part of our preparations. This book caught my eye when looking on Amazon and I felt compelled to share. Currently, Amazon sells the Jesse Tree: A Family Craft for Advent for $6.30 in paperback (and it’s eligible for Prime shipping!)
The Advent wreath is something that our family has historically done in the home. Usually, we light it at the dinner hour as everyone is home. In the past, we’ve used the small leaflet in our church’s bulletin with suggested prayers for each week. However, We Light the Candles caught my eye as it breaks it down by day. The musician in me loves that there are suggested hymns for some of the days, too. (Or so it seems from the preview Amazon provides.) At just around $4 with free prime shipping, this is another low cost alternative to get your family moving on this wonderful Advent tradition.
For families that want to have a more story like format to their family Advent devotionals, you might be interested in one of the titles by Arnold Ytreeide. We used to own Bartholomew’s Passage when the boys were younger, however I found the stories too long for the preschool and early elementary ages and decided to sell it when we were moving from Ohio many moons ago. Now that all but one of the sons is out of that age range, I wish it was still in the house. I did notice that he’s written a book that might appeal more to a family with girl’s, Tabitha’s Travels. All of the books are available in print (around $11 to 12) or for the Kindle (around $10.)
How are YOU planning to prepare for Christmas this Advent Season?
Have you used any of these resources or do you have one that isn’t on this list that you love?
