I enjoy listening to music that inspires me or just helps point my eyes towards God.  Loved by JJ Heller  is a new release on CD that does help me reflect more upon our Heavenly Father while providing a soothing backdrop of music.

When JJ Heller and her husband/co-writer, Dave, began writing for their sixth studio album LOVED, life looked a few shades darker, more painful and confusing than it had during the work on their work of the recent past. Over the past few years, the duo steered much of their material toward the whimsical and simple joys of life, love and new parenthood. But, when confronted by illness, death and broken marriages within their community, the Hellers chose to stay true to the weight of their season of life when crafting lyrics this time around.

"LOVED is a collection of songs that belong together; there’s a common thread connecting all of them," JJ says. "It’s setting our sights on the horizon opposed to the few steps in front of us. It’s an album about resolve. It’s about steeling ourselves for the journey in front of us, but being assured of who we are and where our destiny lies."

My Thoughts on Loved by JJ Heller

I had not heard of JJ Heller before accepting this review.  After watching the You Tub video embedded above, I knew that this album would resonate with me.  My first impression was not wrong.

 

I love the style of the songs on this album.  While the pieces are not super peppy, they are also not so sedate as to put you to sleep.  Instead, they have a slightly ‘jazz’ or ‘blues’ feel with the tempo doing more to soothe the brokenhearted than to agitate.

Listening to the lyrics, you can really sense the thought that went into each piece and the message of hope to survive the turmoil life can throw at us.  As I’ve had my own share of personal upheaval in the recent past, I found the songs touching my heart in ways I might not have expected. Illness, death and problems within relationships are destined to happen, but God can provide the healing we so desperately crave.  Thank you to the Heller’s for reflecting that in the songs contained on Loved.
