Christmas Jars: A Feel-Good Holiday Film for the Family

I have been, or can be if you click on a link and make a purchase, compensated via a cash payment, gift, or something else of value for writing this post. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

When fall arrives, I join many others with the desire to watch all the feel-good holiday films there are. Thankfully, there are plenty to choose from. However, most are for TV only. Which is something that makes Christmas Jars so special… the film will be shown on Monday, November 4th at 7 pm in select theaters nationwide as part of Fathom Events.

About Christmas Jars

Based on the beloved novel by Jason F. Wright, CHRISTMAS JARS shares the story of Hope Jensen, a reporter who uncovers the remarkable secret behind a holiday phenomenon: money-filled glass jars anonymously given to people in need. The New York Times bestseller has created a new holiday tradition that has changed the lives of people in their time of need, all over the country.

The opening montage shows you part of Hope’s backstory. That she was found by a waitress on Christmas Eve in a diner. That waitress adopted her and raised her as a single mom. Then she becomes ill and dies.

This brings you to ‘today’ where Hope returns to her job at a local news outlet. Here she is stuck as the editor’s assistant with the goal of becoming a reporter. Returning home after that day, she finds the apartment ransacked. Yet, a ray of light appears while the police officer is still collecting her statement. A jar with money inside and labeled “Christmas Jar” is found outside the door.

Hope Receives a Christmas Jar

The next day at work she sees the seasoned reporters failing to bring a good pitch to the editor. So, she asks for a chance. Her pitch ends up being about the Christmas Jars as she has already found there are other recipients over the years.

Given the go-ahead, she embarks on a journey to find out the truth behind the jars. Another recipient tips her off to someone who may be involved. There starts her descent into a web of lies while feeling a strong bond to the family who has been giving out a Christmas Jar each year. And along the way she falls for Ian, part owner in the family’s furniture restoration business.

More Information from the Studio

“‘Christmas Jars’ is a special kind of film that will draw audiences into the lives of its characters in a deeply moving way,” said Michael Dunn, managing director of BYUtv. “It is an emotional, entertaining ride that we knew needed to be shared as widely as possible. Partnering with Fathom Events allows us to take this story to communities across the country and help families everywhere launch their holiday celebrations in a meaningful way.”

“It’s tough to articulate what it means to see ‘Christmas Jars’ finally coming to life,” said Wright. “I’m so thrilled with what the team has done and that I don’t have to pretend to like the adaptation of my novel. I’m absolutely in love with it. Even more than buying a ticket and eating some popcorn, I want folks to go home and join the ‘Christmas Jars’ movement by putting a jar on their counter, filling it up and giving it away anonymously to someone in need during the holidays.”

Starring Jeni Ross (“Suits,” “Titans”) and Markian Tarasiuk (“Take Two,” “The Magicians”), the film is directed by Jonathan Wright (“Awakening the Zodiac,” “Love, Romance, & Chocolate”) and produced by critically acclaimed production company Muse Entertainment (“The Kennedys,” “The Wool Cap”) in association with BYUtv.

My Thoughts on Christmas Jars as a Feel-Good Holiday Movie

Like many feel-good holiday films, Christmas Jars has a bit of romance built into the story. After all, that is something always at the heart of those films…love.

However, the budding romance between Hope and Ian is more of a side story. The primary focus of the film is the direct attention to acts of kindness as a way to celebrate Christmas.

It is very easy to adopt a cynical outlook on people. There are terrible things done to others in this world. Yet, there are many people who are good and may just need a seed planted to help them bloom in their works of kindness.

This is what Christmas Jars means to me. Providing people who are down on their luck with a bright spot in the darkness. Paying forward to others. And in the process experiencing the joy that comes from giving freely from your heart.

And like many other movies in this genre, bring the tissues. Just the opening montage brings out the tears!
