Disney’s Dumbo (2019 Live Action)

I have been, or can be if you click on a link and make a purchase, compensated via a cash payment, gift, or something else of value for writing this post. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

The need to belong and be a part of something (e.g. a family) is deep-seated within all of us. When you are different than others, it can be a real struggle. What has always come through to me from Disney’s Dumbo story is how we can all find something we bring to the table.

Inspired by Disney’s Dumbo: Choosing Your Place at the Circus

I see it as no accident that Dumbo takes place in a circus. This is a ‘family’ where everyone is a bit odd and out of place. Yet, together they can bond and find their place in the world.

It is easy to consider some of the circus performers to be different. Not many people want to get up close and personal with lions to tame them. Or, to be the person flying through the air with the greatest of ease. Even though the Ringmaster might look normal to the naked eye, they also can feel isolated from the normal world.

In anticipation of the movie, I chatted with my 9-year-old son about what type of circus person he would be. Without hesitation, he said the Ringmaster. Funny how that’s probably the spot I’d pick for myself as well. Only, I think our reasoning is a bit different.

For my son, he sees it as a front and center attention spot. Given how introverted my boys tend to be, that surprises me. However, there is something surreal about being on a stage that might erase that desire to be invisible. What was MOST important to him was the way you would dress. A cool hat, a stick and spiffy clothes.  Well, alrighty then…

My pull towards being a Ringmaster is my love of helping to guide people along in life. While the Ringmaster is in and out of the spotlight, they are continually drawing your attention to someone else with a great skill to showcase.

About Disney’s Dumbo (2019 Live Action)

From Disney and visionary director Tim Burton, “Dumbo” expands on the beloved classic story where differences are celebrated, family is cherished and dreams take flight.

Circus owner Max Medici (Danny DeVito) enlists former star Holt Farrier (Colin Farrell) and his children Milly (Nico Parker) and Joe (Finley Hobbins) to care for a newborn elephant whose oversized ears make him a laughingstock in an already struggling circus.

But when they discover that Dumbo can fly, the circus makes an incredible comeback, attracting persuasive entrepreneur V.A. Vandevere (Michael Keaton), who recruits the peculiar pachyderm for his newest, larger-than-life entertainment venture, Dreamland.

Dumbo soars to new heights alongside a charming and spectacular aerial artist, Colette Marchant (Eva Green), until Holt learns that beneath its shiny veneer, Dreamland is full of dark secrets.

“Dumbo” soars into theaters on March 29.
