Dreaming of Warmer Weather and Outdoor Projects with Home Depot #DigIn

Wintertime in Alaska can seem to drag on forever. The sun seems to go into hiding and the ground is typically covered in white from late October until sometime in April. As I type, we are experiencing a warm up that is helping to melt the 12+ inches of snow that fell last week. More sunshine each day coupled with slightly warmer temperatures (we’re talking near 40 degrees) has me dreaming of warmer weather and outdoor projects with Home Depot.
This past weekend, I took a few minutes to start thinking about what projects we want to tackle outside during our short ‘warm’ weather season. Thankfully, The Home Depot’s Garden Club had several ideas to get the creative juices flowing for me.
As I know that summer days are numbered and several of them are already dedicated to enjoying the Alaskan outdoors, my actual project list stays relatively short. My expectations are centered around gardening and landscaping projects that help make our outdoor space both more usable and pleasing for the eyes.
Outdoor Projects with Home Depot~ Gardening
Fresh produce is expensive up here and with 4 growing boys I can use a more economical method of acquiring some of our fresh vegetables. One benefit to Alaska is that the long hours of daylight can help with growing some amazing produce. However, our mountainside location also means that the ground is rocky and a bit more challenging for a vegetable garden. In past years, we’ve planted seeds and plants and had mixed results.
Here’s what I am thinking could be the solution ~ raised beds! That way we can purchase soil that is ready to support a garden and not worry about the rocks being an issue. I also am looking forward to easier weed control and clear pathways compared to the row method of planting hubby has done for years. Doesn’t this raised bed garden featured on the Home Depot site look lovely and functional?
Outdoor Projects with Home Depot~ Beautifying the Yard
Last summer, I did something I had not wanted to splurge on in previous years. I bought several hanging baskets at our local Home Depot. Previous owners of our house had already prepared the front for 4 hanging baskets along the porch with hooks and hoses for watering. Their preparation really made a difference in my ability to keep the flowers looking good for the season.
This summer I’d like to go beyond just a splash of color along the front of the house. I could really go for creating a better social space in our backyard. We have a gravel drive in the back which will most likely be left in place. But, the wind storms from last September helped to open up another area of our property which is just calling for some attention. Whether it will become a small oasis for adults or a play area for the kids is yet to be seen. With Home Depot, though, I am sure that it will be fantastic.

Raised beds are amazing! I put mine in last year and it was well worth the work. My crop was impressive, and so easy to tend.
Love that spring is here, thanks for the fun inspiration! Can’t wait to “dig in” this year! 😉
Well, warmer weather is hiding in Alaska as it has been snowing daily since Saturday. Thankfully, I’m on ‘vacation’ in a warmer climate at the moment where there are actually flowers!
I really miss spring here in Vermont too. I cannot wait for warmer weather.
It’s been a balmy 40+ degrees the past few days and I’ve really enjoyed not having to wear my winter coat. Summer still seems far away, though.
Raised beds are very useful and easier to take care of. Not as much stooping. It’s great that the hanging basket area has watering.
I agree, Sarah. The watering built in for the hanging baskets makes life easier.
Raised Beds are awesome! Much easier on the back at times too. There is a way to grow your raised bed as needed with potatoes, makes digging them up much easier!
I’ll have to look into potatoes in a raised bed, Mallery. Hubby is so stuck on doing things they way he grew up. However, his family had an acre of land for *just* the vegetable garden with great sun, etc.
I love that Home Depot is offering The Garden Club to their customers and adding in some savings as well! I can’t wait to join.
I love to save money, Amiyrah. So, I am super excited about the Garden Club, too.
We have raised beds as well, love them! Helps keeps our dogs out and allows us to get our hands dirty without the back breaking work!!
I keep forgetting about the work being a bit easier on the back. Thanks for that reminder, Brianne!
We have a raised bed garden. They are so easy to use! Keeps everything in one spot and easy to weed too.
That’s what I’ve been saying to my husband for years, Cecile! I am so hoping we get it done and reap the reward this summer.
I love the raised beds! I need those in my yard for my garden, it seems as though no matter where I plant, something never turns out so if I start fresh everything may just grow amazingly!
Thanks for the ideas(:
I’m thinking along the same lines, Chacoy. Then if things do not grow well, I can’t say it was the rocky soil we have.
