Think Back Thursday ~ Railroad/Train/Train Tracks

ThinkBackThursday_2-004 She’s doing a theme for each week and this week is Railroad/Train/Train Tracks.  Make sure you visit her post (if you haven’t already) to see a nice collection of photos. I pulled photos from a few ‘adventures’ on the Alaska Railroad to share here.

Spencer Glacier Whistle Stop Boy Scout Trip

Last Summer, the older boys and I went on a day long trip with their Boy Scout Troop.  We caught the train in Anchorage, rode it to the Spencer Glacier Whistle Stop, and then caught it part way back to Anchorage before transferring to a bus.  They’d never been on a train before and I’d only taken the few minute ‘sample’ ride as a child.

Short “Sample” Ride in Anchorage (Spring 2012)

The younger boys and I went to the Alaska Railroad open house this past spring.  After standing in line for over an hour, we got to ride the train for about 15 minutes.  It was just enough to give them a taste for it and want a longer trip in the future.  My only regrets for that visit was not eating a big lunch before we arrived (as they were starving by the time we left) and not having heavier jackets to wear.  Thankfully, there was another family in line with us that held our place so I could take the boys into the static displays to get warm and break up the wait.

Both trips look like fun. The first trip because your older boys were with their scouting friends… but I like the second train better. I LOVE that open glass ceiling on the Alaska Railroad. That would make for a wonderful longer trip, the views would be spectacular from that train.

Sorry you didn’t find your Franklin Institute train pictures. If I ever find the train pictures I couldn’t find I might do trains again. Maybe you will have found your pictures by then also.

Thanks for linking up. I sooo appreciate it. I know you have a busy schedule. God Bless you and your family.

Looks like fun! Isn’t the dome car awesome?! Even on the mostly prairie country train trips I’ve been on, the dome car is wonderful. I’d love to do a rail/cruise through Alaska combo trip – it’s on my bucket list!
