The Adventures of Tintin
I have been, or can be if you click on a link and make a purchase, compensated via a cash payment, gift, or something else of value for writing this post. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.
I vaguely recall the comic books detailing the adventures of Tintin. But, they were not fully on my radar growing up.
When we selected The Adventures of Tintin to watch for a family movie afternoon, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I even had a certain 14 year old lamenting that this was the movie selection as he wanted a “good action-adventure” film.
Well, I think everyone ended up pleased with the choice. (Even though I must admit that I was distracted for the first part of the film and didn’t catch it all.)
Synopsis ~
Tintin is a young Belgian reporter who along with his trusty dog, Snowy, enjoys unraveling mysteries. The latest one to come his way starts of with the purchase of an intricately designed model ship called the Unicorn from a somewhat anxious merchant.
In his quest, Tintin comes up against villian Ivanovich Sakharine (voiced by Daniel Craig), becomes friends with alcohol lover Captain Haddock, and assists the bumbling Interpol agents Thomson and Thompson.
As the story unfolds, the viewer learns how both Sakharine and Haddock have ancesteral ties to a sunken ship that contained a significant amount of treasure.
The question then becomes who will find all the clues necessary to find the treasure.
Thoughts ~
Overall, it was an enjoyable film. The actors did a good job of bringing the characters to life. Parts of the story were funny, yet far-fetched. (How many hotels could be ‘moved’ by a tank and not end in a complete pile of rubble?)
However, what took the prize is the fantastic motion capture animation used for the film. There were times when the animation was so life-like that one questioned if it was an animated film for kids or a wonderful showcase of how far technology has come. Without the fabulous animation, the story might not have been enough to capture and hold you attention.
In a not super glowing thumbs up declaration, my very reluctant teen proclaimed that the film was a LOT better than he thought it would be. And, the other boys are wondering how much time will pass before another installment of this series will make an appearance on the big screen.
The film is rated PG for adventure action violence, some drunkenness, and brief smoking. The boys and I did not recall any vulgar language or inappropriate dress of the characters.
In case you missed the trailers when the movie was being launched, here’s one to watch now:
This post has been submitted for inclusion in The Christian Home Issue 54 hosted here. As the featured columnist for the Movies and Music category, you can be looking forward to weekly posts on what we are watching or music we’ve enjoyed.
Feel free to leave suggestions for me as well that are family friendly or uplifting for adults. While I have movies and some music selections in mind, I’m always on the lookout for other great choices.

Two of my children went to watch it at the theatre and absolutely loved it. I think we’ll all be enjoying it when we get the DVD from the library.
Thanks so much for telling me what it was about. The kids just glowed and told me it was great!
