Rio for light family fun

I have been, or can be if you click on a link and make a purchase, compensated via a cash payment, gift, or something else of value for writing this post. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

There are days when I wish the major film studios would release something rated G that could be safely watched by the entire family.  And, sometimes that does happen.

When Rio came out to theaters, I didn’t pay close attention to the rating.  So, I was pleasantly surprised to see it is rated G.

I would label Rio as a ‘coming of age’ type of film as the lead character, a macaw named Blu, realizes that his comfy life as a pet in the cold north is not all he has the potential to be.  His owner, Linda, is contacted by an ornithologist (Túlio) from Rio as Blu is the last known male of his species.  Eventually, Linda decides to accept the invitation to bring Blu to Rio for a mating session with a female of the species.  Trouble ensues as Blu and the female, Jewel, are stolen from the center to be sold on the black market.

It is through the efforts of Blu and Jewel to gain their freedom and Linda with Túlio to find them that everyone grows and finds a more bountiful life than they had previously envisioned.  In typical Hollywood fashion, the good guys trump the bad and all live happily after.

We loved the animation and the music throughout the film.  With the exception of a few scary moments with a psychotic bird and inclusion of some crazy costumes and dancing indicative of Carnival time in Rio, the movie was really quite family friendly.  My boys enjoyed this film, although a few of them commented about how they’d never visit Rio.  P is convinced that part of the world is quite strange with people going naked all the time.

In case you haven’t seen the trailers, here’s one to watch:

As the featured columnist for the Movies and Music category, you can be looking forward to weekly posts on what we are watching or music we’ve enjoyed. Feel free to leave suggestions for me as well that are family friendly or uplifting for adults.  While I have movies and some music selections in mind, I’m always on the lookout for other great choices.

  1. I decided to see if there was anything worth watching at Red Box one night and spotted Rio. Given the G rating I decided to give it a go. We all loved it. Good movie.
