Homeschool Hints Meme ~ Spelling on Your Computer

Now that Thanksgiving is behind us, Angie at Many Little Blessings has the new Homeschool Hints Meme going again.

Today I thought I would build off of my first post and talk about a different spelling resource we use in our house.

Spelling City has been around for a few years now. At first, it was all free (which makes this frugal mama glad!) Now they have some parts free and other features for subscribers. We haven’t subscribed as of yet, but I am serious considering it.

With All About Spelling, the program is pretty well scripted for me. But, I still use Spelling City on occasion for the boys to get a bit more practice with certain words they find more challenging. This wasn’t an issue in the first two levels of the program. Now, though, I am finding a few times when they are challenged. Plus, R still has struggles with his handwriting. Typing the words into the computer is an easier task for him.

So, the boys don’t know it yet… this mama is planning to give pop quizzes on the All About Spelling words using Spelling City.

P has not been doing much spelling and it is starting to show.  I guess it’s a skill that needs to be maintained and for him Spelling City may be the primary way we tackle things.  I have Spelling Power sitting on my shelf, just chock full of lists that can be entered into Spelling City for him to work on and be quizzed.

One feature I love is that I can print a copy of their test showing the words and what was missed. With the need for some paper trail, this is fantastic.  And, it is one reason I’m considering the premium membership with a grade book included.

For those without a list….you can search public lists on Spelling City!  Here’s my public list of spelling words, including many from My Catholic Speller over the years.  I think most of Level B is on there as well as some from Level A and F.

If you’ve never checked it out, head on over and give it a whirl. No need to be a homeschooler to use it, either.  Think of the reinforcement it could give to kids studying for tests at school!  All you do is enter the list, then the child can be ‘taught’ the words, ‘play’ a few games with the words, and then ‘test’ on them.  They even have a bunch of teacher resources available.

Overall this is a great place on the web and one that I have not been using near enough in the recent past.  Look out, boys, Mama’s got her eyes on some more variety in our homeschool!
