TOS Crew Review ~ Math Tutor Pre-Algebra and TI-84 Calculator Tutor

I have been, or can be if you click on a link and make a purchase, compensated via a cash payment, gift, or something else of value for writing this post. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

Last year, we had a LOT of math products for review on the TOS Crew. So, I find it a bit ironic to start off the year with another set of DVDs from Math Tutor DVD. Not that I’m complaining as P really can use the extra help.

This year they sent us the Pre-algebra I DVD set and the TI-83/TI-84 Calculator Use DVD. Since P is just starting on pre-algebra, that’s the DVD set we focused on the most for this review.

Like the ones we reviewed back in 2008, the Pre-Algebra Vol. 1 DVD set walks through students through the basics.  I even appreciated the recap of some basic terminology that you need to grasp to succeed in advanced math.  (It has been a while since I’ve done math that requires much thought.)  I especially liked his analogy of negative numbers to a debt owed rather than just referring students to a number line.

I’ll admit that we have been going through that one slowly, just viewing the sections that apply to his current studies. However, I can guarantee that we’ll be giving this DVD set quite the workout this year.

If the algebra program he does next year uses the TI calculators, I think that DVD set will see a fair amount of use.  I really wish there had been something like this when dad bought me my first scientific calculator.  I still have that calculator and barely know how to do all it CAN do.  Graphing calculators are the same and it gets quite frustrating trying to solve a problem and not know how to use the tool you’ve been given.  With 8 hours of direction, this DVD set could help shorten that learning curve and have your student making progress in their studies.

You can purchase the Pre-Algebra Vol. 1 DVD set or the TI-83/84 DVD set for $26.99 from Math Tutor DVD.  One nice feature to their website is the ability to ‘sample’ some of the lessons.  Just click on the DVD set of interest and scroll down to see if sample clips are available to view.
