TOS Crew Review ~ Memoria Press

I have been, or can be if you click on a link and make a purchase, compensated via a cash payment, gift, or something else of value for writing this post. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

My first introduction to Memoria Press was when we purchased a copy of Prima Latina for the family. Our eldest son thought it would be ‘cool’ to learn Latin and then attend a Latin Mass as a family. I even acquired a copy of the DVD set to help in our instruction as I had never studied Latin myself. As a family, we would sit down and watch the videos and then continue our studies with the text later. As usual, life got in the way (2 moves in under a year) and this was one component of our homeschool life we set aside for later use.

As the last vendor to be mailing out products to the TOS Crew this year, Memoria Press emailed each of us with suggested products given our family composite and the option to substitute as needed. Since I wanted to start our Latin studies back up and the boys are a little older now, I gladly accepted their suggestion for Latina Christiana I. I did substitute Famous Men of the Modern Ages instead of the Roman one originally suggested. This was more to appease the boys who have had their fair share of Ancient Roman studies in the past few years.

When the package arrived on our doorstep, I was quite impressed with the care given to packaging and tickled pink to see the DVD set included with the printed materials for Latina Christiana I. Given how busy my own schedule can get, the ability to have some lessons presented by another person (via the DVD in this case) is a bonus in my book. I also enjoyed pouring over the back issue of “The Classical Teacher” published by Memoria Press. It is a mixture of catalog and articles relating to the classical approach of education.

So far, the boys have enjoyed learning alongside me using the DVDs for Latin as well as the printed books. The idea of learning a few prayers and songs in Latin has been well received and they often begin all our prayers with “Oremus.”

The stories for Famous Men of Modern Times have been better received than the more traditional textbook format we’ve occasionally used. Seeing that they enjoy both studies did not surprise me in the least. We’ve been using Famous Men of the Middle Ages for months now, so the format was familiar with just the individuals featured changing. I really like the teacher’s guide with additional tests available to give the student as desired. The boys appreciate the inclusion of some color artwork throughout the text.

Latina Christiana I retails for $39.95 and is available direct from Memoria Press as well as through other authorized vendors. The DVD set retails for $55, although you can bundle the texts and DVDs along with a flashcard set through Memoria Press at the cost of $97.90. Famous Men of Modern Times can be purchased individually ($16.95 for the text, $17.95 for the student guide and $17.95 for the teacher guide) or as a set for $39.95.
