There are several smaller communities within this resort area as well as a few major hotel chains and 2 shopping areas. They also have a few incredible golf courses, if that’s your thing.
All of the different communities and hotel properties have pools on site. There are also fitness areas for those who need them.
Waikoloa Beach Resort: A-Bay Beach
When you think of Hawaii, you usually think of gorgeous beaches. Lots of sand, palm trees, and water in amazing shades are a few of characteristics of the iconic Hawaiian beach.
At a few points in the community, you will find access to A-Bay. This is a narrow strip of beach that runs along the Waikoloa Beach Resort property.
When we were visiting, the main parking lot with access was closed. So, we had to use a smaller lot near the Marriott which brought you to a different portion of the beach.
We arrived early in the morning, so there were plenty of lounge chairs to use. And, we avoided the heat of mid-day with a return to our accommodations.
With walk-in access to the water, people of all ages can enjoy snorkeling or swimming. A rental hut provides other options as well.
This particular stretch of the beach also had a volleyball court.
Waikoloa Beach Resort: Shopping & Entertainment
There are 2 main shopping areas in the Waikoloa Beach Resort. Both have an assortment of restaurants and shops.
At Queen’s Marketplace, you will find a small grocery store which also sells ready-made food items. We walked from our condo that first morning to enjoy the sights and grab a bag of coffee. As it was rather hot, even early in the morning, my son was ‘dying’ by the time we arrived.
In the center, there is a koi pond with designated feeding times that you can view.
The Koi Pond at Queens Marketplace is a fun place for the kids in the Waikoloa Beach Resort. Both offer free shows during the week. I went to one of the free concerts with my most musically inclined son. We both enjoyed a few songs sitting in the cooler Hawaiian night with the stars above us.
Kings Shops has a convenience store along with more upscale shops.
As it was off-season when we visited, there was not a crowd. However, I would expect during the high tourist season you may not find a seat.
Waikoloa Beach Resort: Links to the Past
The final aspect of this area is the links it has to the past. Hawaii is steeped in history. You just need to know where to look!
Near the Kings’ Shops, they have a spot where a weekly petroglyph tour occurs. We did not go on this particular tour. However, we did explore other areas where petroglyphs are found.
Additionally, you will find the King’s Highway running through the community. This is the path walked by kings of long ago.
Talking to a few residents about it, I learned that there are many who set off on the walk without bringing water along. Even if it is early in the day, you will want that water. The black rocks along the path emit so much heat towards you that dehydration is not uncommon.
For anyone planning a trip to the Big Island of Hawaii, I definitely recommend stopping here. Pretty much everything is open to the public, so no need to be staying on site. You can check out their calendar on their website, too. Loads of fun to be had!
