Do you have a cell phone?
Okay, what kind of silly question is that?
My guess is that almost all of the readers of this site do. And, most of us have a smartphone. Some of you might not even keep a landline to your house, choosing to use cell phones only.
When my cell phone service provider sold out our contracts to a provider I didn’t particularly like, I started looking at options. This included the need for a new phone as my original smartphone was having some issues.
Something I knew is that I did not want to be locked into a long-term contract just to get a new phone.
What is an Unlocked Phone and Why Use One?
An unlocked phone is one that is not tied to any particular provider or locked into a contract.
Instead, it is ready to be used with any provider’s SIM card. You just need to make sure that the unlocked phone you select is one that works with the provider you want to use.
Depending upon the phone, it may even work internationally with a SIM card picked up at the airport when you land. Some phones even are dual-SIM which allow you to leave your U.S. based card inside while adding the new one when you travel.
Now, the initial cost up front might have you balking at first. This is especially true if you want a new phone like the Samsung Galaxy 7. After all, those contract deals work the cost of the phone into the plan so you pay less up front.
But, in the long run, it can end up being cheaper.
For me, it meant the ability to do a prepaid plan that was less expensive for me than a post-paid one. That way I am not locked into a set plan for years and can adjust based on my needs. If the provider I selected for that prepaid plan ended up with service that didn’t meet my needs, then I could switch to another easily.
Buying an Unlocked Phone
When it came time to purchase my unlocked phone, I turned to Best Buy. I knew that I could go into the store and have someone answer my questions. And, most of the phones I was interested were in stock to view even if I had to order online for the unlocked version.
