I have been, or can be if you click on a link and make a purchase, compensated via a cash payment, gift, or something else of value for writing this post. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.
While I am a strong advocate of taking a young child to the library to browse the stacks and select reading material that appeals to them, I have also fallen in love with reading textbooks for even the younger grades. I view them as anthologies that are grade appropriate.
Why do I love these textbooks?
Well, they are hardbound books that pull together a variety of reading material deemed grade level. Many of these selections for the younger grades could be purchased as softback books to line your shelves. But, there is something nice about having it all bound together in one or two volumes.
Pearson’s Reading Street is one such textbook series for elementary students that we have come to love. As a member of the TOS Homeschool Crew, we were sent the two volume Grade 2 set of student books. While a few of the titles inside the pages were ones we had already read, there were many other selections we had not previously seen or read.
The set-up is that similar themed selections are grouped into units. The types of selections are a mixture of fiction and non-fiction. Within each unit, the main selections are introduced, then presented, followed by discussion questions and other ways to expand learning provided (including writing prompts!) and then followed by a related reading selection.
Overall, D and I have enjoyed using this product. We’ve primarily done each selection as a read aloud (as in D reading to ME!) and orally gone over the discussion questions. I liked the picture timeline for review where the student retells the story as prompted by the pictures. After a bit of searching online, I found some free resources for educators that work with this specific title. You can find one mega page HERE and another page of resources HERE. This makes it easy to use the student texts as the base and expand without having teacher editions.
The student package (both volumes) for Grade 2 can be purchased new for $81.97. Individual volumes can be purchased for $40.97. Teachers editions are a bit expensive and most likely NOT necessary for homeschoolers. They have a button to click and view a sample, but I’ll admit to giving up in frustration as you have to register and even after I did that it wanted more information.
