I have been, or can be if you click on a link and make a purchase, compensated via a cash payment, gift, or something else of value for writing this post. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.
Since joining the TOS Crew 3 years ago, we have only reviewed a handful of products for younger kids. The vast majority of material has been geared towards upper elementary students on up. Not that J hasn’t enjoyed some of the products we’ve reviewed as a family.
Now, he had the chance to review a product just for him.
Monki See Baby’s First Words DVD was sent to us with the target ‘audience’ been young children ages 3 months through 2 years old. So, J is just the right age for it.
The premise behind this series is to help lay the foundation for reading through picture rich presentation of key words with music interspersed throughout the volume. Words are put on the screen in hopes that visually seeing words will lead to a child learning to recognize it by sight. This is further promoted through a slide show option for a quick review of the key words.
Along with the DVD title, we were sent the softcover book, Know Your Monkey. This book has pages with just the words followed by the words coming to life through the monkeys acting out the word. J enjoys reading this with us and will often mimic the action being demonstrated. Repeated reading with a parent pointing out the isolated words could lead to their ability to read 29 words. I can’t say that J has learned to read the words, but it’s only been a short while of using the materials.
I have to say that his older brothers were a bit leery about being around when J viewed this title. However, they did not find it obnoxious as they thought it could be. So, no one flees from the room if it is playing.
For anyone curious as to how J received this product, I have to say that it has expanded his ‘go to’ videos he’ll bring it over to view. He’ll carry the DVD case over to me and say “Monki …(pause) ..See …(pause) ..in” to indicate he wants to watch the video. He also enjoys sitting with the book, sometimes while the DVD is playing. One thing he does not do is sit in place, glued to the TV. Instead, he is up and moving about the room. Personally, I think that’s a better way to soak up the information.
Baby’s First Words DVD retails for $24.95 ($19.95 sale price as of today) and the Know Your Monkey book retails for $11.95 ($9.95 sale price as of today.) They have 2 other DVDs and 1 other book available as well as flashcards to complement the DVDs. You can purchase a complete set of materials for $139.95 (a 45% savings off full retail pricing.) I’d also suggest reading through the background of this product and why you might consider getting a young child on the path of learning.
