I have been, or can be if you click on a link and make a purchase, compensated via a cash payment, gift, or something else of value for writing this post. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.
The more I see of the products that The Critical Thinking Company has, the more I want to use in our homeschool. Receiving a copy of Balance Benders, Beginning (Grades 2 – 6) just opened up another door of learning for our family.
As someone who loves puzzles, this book was real appealing to me. Suduko puzzles are a favorite for me and even the boys will do kid sized ones to help build those numeric puzzle skills. Well, Balance Benders takes that idea and gets the user to flex those logic and algebraic reasoning ‘muscles’.
Each page has a scale on the top showing what figures balance with other figures. The challenge is to then determine which three of the six possible configurations is true. As you progress through the book, the pages become a bit more challenging to figure out. There is a group of Balance Tips (aka algebraic concepts) at the end of the book to help provide guidance. And, for the parent who’s left scratching their own head over a page, there are solutions for each page at the very end.
It was no great surprise to me that my puzzle loving guy (D) was the most anxious to try out this product. He did fairly well for the first few pages with little guidance at all. But, it quickly became a bit challenging for my first grader to handle on his own. Having those Balance Tips helps to show him the ‘rules’ that make solving the puzzle a bit easier.
You can purchase Balance Benders directly from The Critical Thinking Company. The Beginning Level costs $9.99. You can even view a sample page from the book to give you a better sense of what these ‘puzzles’ look like.
As always, you can read what other TOS Crew mates are saying about The Critical Thinking Company products on the TOS Homeschool Crew page. Our family was provided with a copy of Balance Benders in exchange for our review. No other compensation was provided to me and the opinions expressed in the review are my own.
