A few weeks ago, the members of TOS Crew were given the opportunity to see the book And Then Mama Said…. it Takes Time to Learn to Read. (Affiliate Links used.)
This darling book by Gena Suarez broaches the subject of late readers in a non-threatening way. For the homeschooled family, the book offers a ‘bonus’ of modeling a homeschool family.
***Update in 2017, you can only get an ebook copy of this sweet title.***
Seeing three different children learn this important skill, I can understand how varied their abilities are in timing.
My youngest son, D, is currently learning to read. With the older boys, they had their initial phonics and reading in a school format. However, I still worked with each at home.
Reading did not come naturally for my eldest son and he struggled for a while. While the initial framework was begun with my middle son, our first year homeschooling was primarily focused on reading. Even today, we spend time each week with him reading aloud so I can help catch problems as they arise. R is also helping D learn phonics which reinforces his own knowledge at the same time.
Part of R’s reading aloud is done with the youngest, including a recent reading of this book. Both boys enjoyed the story and will be using the activity book over the next few weeks. D has already flipped through the story since R read it to him and I’ll probably be reading it alound a few times myself. I found that R enjoyed reading it as every other page had an illustration.
If there is a late bloomer in your house when it come to reading independently OR even a beginning reader who could use some encouragement, then I recommend checking out And Then Mama Said….It Takes Time to Learn to Read. They might appreciate hearing they are not alone in their struggle to read and that with time it will happen.
