P is into pretty much anything with a military theme. Camo pants is a clothing article of choice, he is addicted to many of the reality TV shows with a military connection, and he has is sights set on serving in the military as an adult. Plus, he loves to read. So, when he heard about this book, he begged me to be on the review list. Sadly, he was not so enamored with the book. He didn’t finish before turning it over to me to read.
Before I go into the why, here’s the blurb from the Reaper Two-Six site.
The world is suffering from the effects of out-of-control terrorism. Governments are spending huge amounts of precious capital for the safety and security of air and rail transportation as well as inspections at all sea ports. The global economic effect is crippling; countries struggle to manage commerce, international trade, business growth, job creation and tourism. The world’s economy is on the brink of collapse.
The Global Defense Organization™ (GDO) has been created to be a cost effective multinational elite group that monitors, infiltrates and eliminates terrorist activities within all supporting countries. Known only as Reaper Two-Six™, this secret 48 member squadron has quickly earned a reputation for precisely eliminating terrorist threats, in the air and on the ground.
Why did China and Columbia oppose the creation of the GDO? Are they connected to global terrorist cells? Are they secretly financing the sale of weapons?
The Reaper’s greatest challenge is now upon them; infiltrate China and Columbia to discover their real intentions. Through a series of electrifying and heart-stopping missions, see how the Reapers use their skills and advanced technology to put fear back where it belongs, in the minds of the terrorists, not in the minds of its citizens.
The Rise of Global Insurgency kicks off in the highly trained black-ops squadron’s fifth year of operations. Showcasing fast-paced action, suspense and drama, along with utilizing state-of-the-art technology, exhilarating combat sequences, believable, hard-edged characters and a fresh, inventive plot, this new techno-thriller novel is a must read.
Thoughts on the story:
P’s complaints all centered around things in the story which didn’t seem to ring true to him. He spent time fussing at the book (verbally) over the names of guns that he thought did not exist. A quick search on Swagbucks confirmed that the author had done his job researching.
Then he went into a rant about too much time being spent talking about NASCAR racing. I’ll give him that NASCAR racing is not a favorite thing in our household. But, I haven’t any idea why he thought a group of ex-military people wouldn’t want to relax by going to a live event like a NASCAR race.
After a while, he finally admitted to not enjoying the style of writing. He loves the idea of military things, but at this point much just enjoy books that engage emotion more than being specific to details. I can say that this is one of the first novels in the military thriller genre to read, so it might even be that he wouldn’t like novels by other authors of that genre.
From my perspective, this is a decent first publication. However, there is something about the book that doesn’t quite flow well in a manner to truly engage the reader. I usually judge a book by how much it makes me want to stay up late to keep reading. Compelling stories do that for me and this one didn’t hit that mark. A bit more character development might have gone a long way to engaging the reader.
Good things I can say about the book? I loved the small maps at the start of each chapter to give you the visual snapshot of that geographical area. I admire Mr. Grand’s attention to detail of all things technical throughout the novel as well. Call me crazy, but I also have a real appreciation for the layout of this title. Very easy on my aging eyes!
Curious if this might be a good read for you? The author has the first chapter available to read. If you enjoy that preview, you can purchase Reaper Two-Six Year 5 from Amazon with a retail price of $10.99 in paperback or $4.99 for Kindle.
