Like many other youngsters, my boys love to play Minecraft. Unlike some video games, this one is pretty open for what you can do and it helps to engage your mind. I’ve even heard about people incorporating it into their homeschool curriculum. However, for some of us it is not so intuitive to know how to get started. Thankfully the familiar Dummies books from Wiley has launched a Minecraft book series with a few available now and more to come in the new year.
About the Minecraft Books
Minecraft For Dummies can help those of us parents who haven’t a clue what the kids are doing or how they are doing it. Written by 16 year old Jacob Cordeiro, MinecraftFor Dummies is a 160 page primer on everything you need to know about the virtual world. It’s an easy to read book for kids who want to know more about the game and strategy and also for parents who want to feel more educated about what their kids are doing when they’re playing Minecraft.
Minecraft Construction For Dummies is an accessible guide that makes Minecraft construction easy. This title provides step-by-step instructions to help you build houses, boats, islands, and more; addresses how to mine the right materials for basic building; reveals how to build statues, beacons, and pillars as landmarks; and explores how to develop your farm for renewable resources.
Minecraft Recipes For Dummies is a quick, handy reference on Minecraft recipes. This book will help you look up the required items and figure out which blocks you need to gather to create each item. You’ll get recipes for weapons, armor, transportation, mechanism, food, dye, wool, and brewing, as well as information on enchanting, repairing, gathering, farming, efficiency, and more.
Minecraft Redstone For Dummies is marked as “The indispensable primer for achieving redstone greatness.” This key element is essential for crafting and brewing, and can be placed on the ground as redstone dust – a flat, transparent block that can transmit redstone power, the major component of most redstone circuits. Written by a recognized Minecraft expert, this useful guide walks you through mining, smelting, and other methods of obtaining redstone, and teaches you how to make the most of your redstone stores. Craft a compass, piston, lamp, or torch, brew a potion that reverts to Level 1, or turn it to dust to help find nearby power components. Whether you’re in Creative or Survival mode, redstone mastery is crucial for successful gameplay.
Brief Thoughts on the Minecraft Books
The boys commented that the Minecraft for Dummies, Portable Edition contained information they already know. That didnt’ surprise me as they’ve been playing for years and even working with the 5 year old to learn. The construction one was mostly filled with information they all knew, but the younger boys are still learning and can benefit from this one.
Minecraft Recipes is a great reference for all of them, but the book they most appreciated is Minecraft Redstone as it is the more challenging aspect of play in Minecraft.
