As much as I like to think I am making time for God in my life, there are times when it hits me that I do so inconsistently. It isn’t that I do not make time for prayer in my day. I definitely do that and have been able to find God in the ordinary.
Rather, I recognize that I need to remove myself from the ordinary at times to fully immerse myself in relationship with God. If I don’t step away from ordinary life, then it is too easy to be sucked back into it.
My solution has typically come in the form of a women’s half-day retreat at church each January. I love dedicating that time. Yet, I am finding that it is often shorter than my soul desires. So, my more recent solution has been to spend part of my travel time to draw inward. While there might be hours on a plane, I am still surrounded by people and distractions.
So what is a gal to do?
After reading through Letitia Suk’s Getaway with God, I now see why some of my friends have been after me to do a weekend silent retreat. In this title, she walks through not just the WHY, but the HOW of a personal retreat. By personal retreat, she means just that: YOU alone with God. So this is NOT a large group retreat with a bunch of fellowship.
Recognizing that there are some of us who can come up with a long list of objections, she also talks about how to make it happen. This doesn’t have to be an incredibly expensive venture. With a little investigation, you may find there is a retreat center within a short drive from your home.
So, grab your favorite beverage and a copy of this book to help you set up a personal retreat with God. You’ll enjoy reading her personal stories woven into the instruction.
I am now going to make time for a personal retreat this coming year. While some frown upon women taking time away from their families, I can see where the end result is a woman who can be a better wife and mother.
