When you combine a star studded cast with kung fu fighting animated animals, what do you get?
Well, my boys would all say Kung Fu Panda!
The original animated film has the storyline showing the transformation of the panda Po from a clumsy panda who idolizes the Fantastic Five and the kung fu moves they make. Much to the surprise of all, he is tagged as the next Dragon Warrior and begins what seems like pointless training alongside his long revered Fantastic Five. Along the way, he finds that he does possess abilities he never thought existed. And, he is the one to save the valley from the evil Tai Lung.
The boys were especially excited to see a copy of Kung Fu Panda 2 under the Christmas tree. I’ve found that some sequels to a good film will fall quite short of expectations. Kung Fu Panda 2 is not in that category at all. If anything, the boys are split over which is the better film.
Kung Fu Panda 2 continues the journey of Po and the Fantastic Five. This time, the villain is Lord Shen a peacock who wanted to eliminate kung fu and gain control of China by harnessing the power of the cannon. Po and the Furious Five set off to thwart Lord Shen’s plans. Only, Po finds himself distracted at times with visions of his background flashing at inopportune times. Before he is able to stop Lord Shen’s destructive path, Po first learns about his parents sacrifice to keep him safe. Without giving the closing scene away, I’ll just say that the producers have left a big opening for another film in the Kung Fu Panda series.
Unlike some animated films for kids, this is one that even Mr. O enjoyed. There really is something appealing for all ages. And, J is now enamored with the song Kung Fu Fighting.”
