There is something I have noticed having been a mother for almost 15 years now. And, it involves dancing!
My observation is that the young child is quite enthusiastic in finding ways to express themselves physically, including the spontaneous dance.
When each of the boys was little, I could hold their little hands and be bop around the room with them to whatever music caught our fancy. Veggie Tales, The Wiggles, The Laurie Berkner Band or whatever was playing on the radio (which was usually a ‘classic rock’ station) would set the stage for our impulse to move to the beat and get our dance on. It didn’t even have to be straight music that could get us up and dancing about as some favorite shows elicited a similar response.
I am loving that there is a toddler in the house as I was seriously missing the chance to be expressive through movement, even if I looked silly in the process. Otherwise, I was getting a lot of stares and glares from the older boys who no longer have the same desire to express themselves through dance.
One show that the older boys cycled through their favorite list is Curious George. George just has wonderful appeal to little kids who are curious about the world around them. The books and show even sparked some interesting ‘conversations’ about what life would be like if they could move around like a monkey.
Acting like animals is definitely a fun activity for those preschool years and works in well with those silly dancing escapades in our house. The added benefit for this mama is a bit of a ‘workout’ when things get moving for a while.
