As I’ve shared before, I love to listen to music the edifies and inspires. Often times, I find myself longing for praise music that will help me shed the shell worn in the world and better connect with God in the process. The Grace Unplugged Soundtrack has been helping me do just that since it entered my home a few weeks ago.
What is Grace Unplugged and what songs are on the Soundtrack?
Grace Unplugged is a feature length film which released into theaters on October 4th this year. In the film, AJ Michalka plays Grace Trey an 18-year-old singer who aspires to more than just singing at her local church, where the worship leader is her father—a former rock star (played by James Denton). With the help of her dad’s former manager (Kevin Pollack), Grace finds fame within her grasp, but must decide if grabbing the fortune is really worth letting go of her faith.
The Soundtrack includes the following songs:
1. All I’ve Ever Needed (AJ Michalka)
2. Desert Song (AJ Michalka)
3. You Never Let Go [feat. James Denton (AJ Michalka)
4. Misunderstood (AJ Michalka)
5. Holding On (Jamie Grace)
6. Our God (Chris Tomlin)
7. Steal My Show (TobyMac)
8. In And Out Of Time (Colton Dixon)
9. The Void (Nine Lashes)
10. The Space Between Us (Shawn McDonald)
11. Welcome To Daylight (Luminate)
12. Amazing Grace (Instrumental) (Josh Wilson)
My Thoughts about the Grace Unplugged Soundtrack
Overall, I have really enjoyed having this CD to enjoy whether in my home or driving in the van. Just having read the description for the movie, I knew that the soundtrack would have a fabulous cross-section of songs that could feed my desire to offer prayer through the use of music.
The refrain from the initial song, All I’ve Ever Needed, really hit home for me as I’ve been wrestling with deciding what God is calling me to do at this moment in time.
I chased a million things
Bright lights and empty dreams
Now here I am
Right where I thought I wanted to be
I’ll trade it all right now
Leave it all and lay it down
To get back to where I belong
Lord, all I’ve ever needed was Your love
Bright lights and empty dreams might refer to this character’s rise in stardom as a musician, but even those of us in the ‘trenches’ of life can be seduced by choices which promise us happiness from the viewpoint of society. In my life, the current choice centers around whether my vocation as a mother means being home all the time versus working outside of the home to have a few more ‘creature comforts.’
My boys listened in on occasion to the soundtrack and all recognized Our God as sung by Chris Tomlin. This was from the same song being used in Vacation Bible School this past year and it was one that they all enjoyed. My 13 year old also expressed that the Amazing Grace instrumental by Josh Wilson was his absolute favorite track. As much as I loved other tracks, I found myself agreeing with him as that rendition has a way of having you cast your concerns aside and just be in the moment.
Listening to the soundtrack these past few weeks has awakened in me a longing to now see the film. If the soundtrack is any measure, I’m sure it is a film my family will enjoy.
