I’ve been brushing up on my general math skills using Math Refresher for Adults from Math Essentials. This book was sent to me for review as part of the Homeschool Review Crew. All opinions are our own.
When you talk to homeschool parents, there are certain subjects that can elicit fear. Teaching math to your kids is one of the top ones.
For many homeschool parents, the fear isn’t for the early elementary grades. Basic operations rarely evoke flashbacks to math class struggles.
Rather it is as the child approaches and enters high school level work that a parent may break a sweat.
Math Essentials for General Math Skills
When it comes time to brush up on your own general math skills, it is great to have an easy to use resource. Something that you can open up right when you need it and get a refresher on the concept along with some practice.
Math Refresher for Adults is such a resource!
For the homeschool mom, it may be a way to reacquire skills learned years ago. This was you can feel more secure in teaching your kids math.
However, this title is also written for others in mind.
People who can benefit from Math Refresher for Adults include:
Someone re-entering the workforce
A person returning to college which requires taking a math placement test
Job Applicants that have to pass a math competency test
Someone entering a medical or tech field
A student seeking an alternate path for high school graduation with for a GED
Someone preparing for the SAT/PSAT
A future teacher preparing for the PRAXIS test
Math Refresher for Adults is separated into two main sections: General Math and Pre-Algebra & Algebra.
General Math Skills include:
charts & graphs
The pre-algebra and algebra section dives into common topics like exponents, square roots, scientific notation, coordinate systems, and probability.
The book is mostly practice problems with some hints. Review of previous concepts is found on the different pages, too. The company also has videos for different lessons available online at no extra charge.
My Thoughts on Math Essentials for Improving General Math Skills
During the review period, I was focused on the algebra section. Most of the topics were easy to get through for me, but a few needed a little refreshing. However, it didn’t long for me to read through the hints and have my a-ha moments.
One of the things I like about the resource is that you can use the table of contents to find the area needing help and jump right in. This is NOT a textbook meant to replace curriculum. Rather, it is a program to help you solidify your general math skills.
The inclusion of a password in the book to access the algebra videos for instruction is an added benefit of purchasing Math Refresher for Adults. That way you can see the math concept in action before attempting the practice problems.
As the book is NOT meant to be photocopied, I did work on sheets of paper or in my head. This means you can go through the material as often as you need. Or, share the book with a teen preparing for testing.
Don’t just take my word for how we found this to be. Visit the Math Essentials post on the Homeschool Review Crew website to see what other homeschooling parents thought about this resource.
