Over the past few years, our family has been incredibly blessed to review the offerings from Heirloom Audio Productions. (You can find past reviews at the bottom of this post.)
With each new release, our family is experiencing another novel from G. A. Henty being brought to life in a very captivating way. The stories on their own are engaging. But, the final radio drama style of them really draws you into the story.
About Captain Bayley’s Heir
Like all of the stories from this company, you begin your journey with Mr. George. In this one, he is traveling to the western United States. He is looking forward to seeing California and the scene of the gold rush. And, he is going about it a little differently than some would choose. He’s hired a driver and wagon to take him across the plains for the ‘full experience.’
Soon he is telling his driver all about another story of the old west, that of Frank who has to flee Victorian England when unjustly accused of a crime.
Listeners first meet Frank, one of two children who live with Captain Bayley, in England. Alice is an honorary cousin of Frank’s that was taken in by Captain Bayley when her parents died from typhoid fever. Frank is his nephew who had been orphaned 6 years earlier at the age of 12. His cousin Fred, also 18, is often found in the company of them both.
A trip to a fight, that he should not have attended, leads to Frank getting into trouble. He is pressured to pay off someone and uses a 10-pound note he found in his room. Only the headmaster of the school says it was stolen from him. Fred makes a sacrifice to help Frank leave England and start a new in America.
From that journey, you join Frank on new adventures which include danger on the trail to California.
Like other Heirloom Audio Productions, the actors providing the voices of the characters are top notch.

Study Guide for Captain Bayley’s Heir
While there are plenty of resources online in the Live the Adventure Club, the study guide goes a little further.
Periodic “Expand Your Learning” boxes cover a variety of topics presented in the story.
There is one about Victorian Money, one covering the idea of Manifest Destiny, and another that talks about the gold fields. (That’s not all of them, though!)
The guide includes a short list of other titles to read on either Victorian England or the Old West.
Finally, you can walk through a Bible study that fits with the story of Captain Bayley’s Heir. Topics in the study include God’s Grace, becoming a Christian, and honoring your parents.
Also inside the pages are things that are available online including Listening Well questions, Thinking Well questions and Defining words.
Our Thoughts About Captain Bayley’s Heir
Yet again, this production was well received by myself and my youngest son. How do I know he is really into the story? When he wants to keep listening without me!
This time around, J took charge of going between segments to listen with the script open on the screen. As a homeschool mom, I like that he can see the words as he is hearing them.
Also, it led to a discussion about how a script is different from a book. He was quick to notice that some paragraphs were skipped in the audio. A quick pause of the program allowed me to show him that they were describing the scene or other things you might be hearing.
Alongside listening to each segment online, J also took the time to take the self-grading individual quizzes. Typically, he got more than half of the questions correct. When I was sitting with him, I could take the time to probe a little further or encourage him to look back at the script to see what he missed.
I highly recommend this and all the previous releases from Heirloom Audio Productions. Not only are you entertained, but there’s a bit of education on life in days past in the process.
