Compared to last week, this has been downright hectic. If there was a theme for the week, it would be healthcare as we had lots of doctor and dentist appointments. So, this week’s meme will be mostly focused on our fun in that realm.
The first appointment was a much overdue physical for me. A ‘laundry list’ of things were addressed (e.g. getting a script for a new inhaler) and I had blood drawn to check on thyroid function. I wasn’t worried about anything, but after hearing both of my sisters have been diagnosed with thyroid problems I wanted to get checked. I’m waiting on the T3 and T4 screens to come back as the initial scan had levels at the high end of normal.
Another discussion from that appointment was the need to start taking D3. I picked some up at Costco and am anxious to see if it helps any with the seasonal affective disorder, too.
She also said to be on the lookout for diabetes. My mom has Type 2 and one sister had gestational diabetes which can predispose you for diabetes. What I hadn’t heard before is that having a larger baby could be indicative of insulin resistance.
Overall, I liked the doctor. But, I wasn’t a happy camper when checking out and the gal wanted me to pay the entire bill in case my insurance didn’t cover it. That didn’t happen, but I still paid more than I probably had to pay. I can understand not knowing how much the insurance would cover for the lab work. But, if you are listed on their preferred provider list, then it should only be the co-pay for the visit.
I also fit in an appointment with the midwife for an annual exam. Some of the exam duplicated the one at the family doc and I might have just done it all in one spot if I’d know they’d cover things like thyroid concerns. I did get my flu shot and am still a little sore in that arm. I really liked this new practice and now just need to get a mammogram to be all set for preventative care.
The younger boys had their 6 month dental visit. We love the pediatric dentist office we are using now for them. J was cooperative with getting his teeth brushed, counted and painted (with fluoride.) D was not as cooperative for part of the exam. First he was refusing to finish getting his teeth polished. That one was solved by letting him hold the ‘straw’ to suck up saliva as I noticed that was a problem for him. But, the only thing that had him opening back up for the fluoride treatment was knowing if he didn’t do it there that he’d have to do it at home with Dad administering it.
Rounding out the health care stuff was the eye doctor. Mr. O got there part way during our appointments so I could have my exam without chasing the toddler. All three boys ended up needing glasses this time. Considering we had 4 exams and ordered glasses for 5 people (including Mr. O ordering glasses that he didn’t get done when he had his appointment last month), I was quite pleased to be finished in about 2 hours. R and I had the same O.D. doing the exam and it turned out to be the father of twin boys in the Boy Scout Troop.
I finally got grades assigned for the boys. And, after having to play catch up on entering grades into the tracking program, I am trying to do it daily again.
I still need to finish the work samples, though. I’m thinking it might be Monday when I need to also submit the Academic Decathalon qualifying tests P has been taking.
Rounding out the week was a much needed run to Sam’s Club and Costco. Plus, the boys and I went to a field trip at one of the grocery stores in Anchorage. It was fun to see some of the behind the scenes. Pictures coming soon in a separate post.
