This post on initial steps to organic gardening was written by me on behalf of The Home Depot.

Usually by early May, I am already looking for plants at the store. I was a bit dismayed when visiting our local Home Depot that the shipment of vegetable and herb plants had not arrived yet. Someone must have known we didn’t need the plants yet as a late season snowstorm arrived last weekend leaving 6 inches of snow on the ground.

It was only a matter of days for most of the snow to melt off the ground. So, with a lot of excitement, our family made the trek to the local Home Depot to pick up some plants and seeds to get started.

Steps to Organic Gardening: Start with a Rich Soil

As I mentioned in my recent post on Organic Gardening Plans, we are not blest with great soil at our house. Matter of fact it is more rock than dirt. Previous owners had created a garden plot and brought in soil. But, over the years the rocks have started to migrate leaving it less than optimal.

I figured we had a few choices: amend the soil we have, create raised beds and fill them with purchased soil, or go for container gardening with organic potting soil. With the colder than normal temps this month, we’ve opted to do a combination of the three.

Mr. O set up our portable greenhouse to start warming the section of soil we’d not used for planting in the past. Some seeds or plants may be going straight into the ground. But, I also have him leaving me space for containers.

We found organic soil for both building up our current garden plot as well as organic potting soil. At first, I considered using just the big bags of organic soil in my few pots. However, more careful examination of the packaging convinced me that I would need the potting soil to maximize the likelihood of harvesting produce.

Steps to Organic Gardening: Choosing Where to Plant Your Plants

While shopping at Home Depot, I decided that any organic container gardening I did this season would require larger pots than I already own. The advantage for us with container gardening is that with the help of a dolly we can move the containers around as needed. If it’s going to be just a ‘little’ cold at night, they can be transported to the greenhouse for some extra warmth. And, if it’s dipping below freezing and the plants are not cold hardy, then they can come into the house or (heated) garage.

I found a lovely pot which looks like it would be heavy, but is really plastic. The boys aren’t sure that it ‘fits’ our yards décor (or lack there of.) However, this mother is thrilled to have a little more pretty in my life.

As for the raised beds, I did have to ask an associate to help me find the kits. Somehow we had walked right past them thinking they would be in more of a center display like the portable greenhouses. Being slanted towards more frugal living, we thought about scavenging odds and ends around the house to build our own. However, I am thinking quick assembly may win out and I’ll be picking up at least one of these kits soon.

Steps to Organic Gardening: Selecting Your Plants

The final step in our organic gardening adventure was to find the plants and seeds we would purchase. I had seen a selection of Bonnie Organic Plants on the Home Depot website. The pricing is fantastic and I would have enjoyed having boxes of plants arrive at the house. However, our state is one of the few where shipping is not available. I was pleased to see that almost all of the plants on the racks at our local Home Depot were labeled organic.

Even the seed selection has several organic options along with heirloom seeds and more ‘conventional’ ones as well. Historically, we ordered a LOT of seeds from Burpee through the mail. It was a relief to find a brand we trust in our local store.

This sponsored post on Netflix Just For Kids is written by me on behalf of Netflix. All opinions are still my own.

When we lived in Maryland and then here in Alaska, we’ve had a subscription to Netflix for portions of the year. Being able to pick what you want to watch when you want to watch it is something we value. And, now that we’ve ditched cable, we were in the market for a video streaming option. Netflix was my go to source for our family.

Right before I had suspended our subscription to Netflix last year, I noticed they had added a tab titled Just For Kids. I didn’t really explore it much at that time. However, since reactivating our subscription, I have been really checking it out.

Netflix’s Just for Kids has family friendly shows (both movies and TV) which are appropriate for children ages 2- 12. With the help of Common Sense Media, this dedicated kids section provides ratings, reviews and information that enable parents to make the best choice for their family. Along the top, you will see favorite characters like Curious George or Elmo. Selecting that character will bring you to their ‘collection’. Or, you can scroll down to see by type of show or even popularity of the movies.

While there are not too many shows on cable that our family misses, J was already begging some days to watch an episode of Caillou. He’d been spoiled by having at least 3 or 4 on demand with our cable provider. Now, with Netflix, he has a ton to pick from for this particular series.

This past weekend, the boys voted on a show to watch from the options on Netflix. Curious George 2 won the honor of being streamed on my laptop which was connected to our TV so all could see.

When the movie concluded, the closing credits ran in the upper left hand corner. This allows for Netflix to suggest other shows you would most likely enjoy based on the selection you just watched.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that you can take Netflix ‘on the road’ or should I say ‘off the computer’ with apps for handheld devices like the iPad and Kindle Fire as well as gaming systems like the Wii. (It wasn’t until after Curious George was over that I remembered we used to stream Netflix through the Wii.) I’ll be interested to see if we can stream on the iPad the next time we are at a RV park with Wi Fi.

Already, the voting is on for selecting the next feature length show to watch. I’ve been pushing ParaNorman, although the boys are thinking there are other options they’d rather watch first. At least one boy has his eye on Tron: Uprising as he loved the Tron movies. With so many options available on Netflix from Hasbro, Disney Jr. and Cartoon Network, it might be a while before we run out of choices. And the next time my 3 year old starts to melt down because he wants to watch Caillou, I have a solution at my fingertips.

What are you watching on TV with your family? Netflix has family favorites from Disney, Disney Jr., Hasbro, Cartoon Network and Dreamworks that are available to stream anytime, anywhere.

And streaming is easier than you think! Download the free app on your iPad, click on the Netflix app on any gaming device, go to the website on your computer – and you’re in business. Check it out here!

As it is so easy to forget the needs of those we do not see on a regular basis, I like to keep abreast of needs beyond my local community. When the opportunity to review Mother India: Life Through the Eyes of the Orphan arose, I decided it would help my own desire to be informed and hopefully open the eyes of some family members at the same time.

About Mother India: Life Through the Eyes of the Orphan

The Documentary Narrated by Rebecca St. James Captures the Lives of 25 Abandoned and Orphaned Children Living on the Streets in India

Winner of “Best Short Documentary” at the 2012 San Diego Christian Film Festival, Mother India is a compelling documentary that chronicles the adventure of 25 courageous orphans living as a family along the railway in Tenali, India. Mother India brings to light the struggles faced daily by over 31 million orphans in India and the challenge of rescuing them from a life of begging and addiction.
Mother India, is the work of first-time filmmakers David Trotter and Shawn Scheinoha. “India is growing in both population and industry, but few people know that there are over 31 million orphans in this nation,” commented Trotter (Executive Producer, Director). “Each of these young lives is much more than a statistic. Every one of them has a name, a face and a story.” Scheinoha (Executive Producer) added, “We’re not out to just tell a tragic story. We’re focused on raising awareness and changing lives.”

My Thoughts on Mother India: Life Through the Eyes of the Orphan

To say that this is a moving documentary that will bring tears to your eyes at times just might be an understatement. This short film had me wanting to laugh at times and cry at others. It is so easy to be comfortable in our lives and not truly recognize the harsh conditions that others have in their daily lives. Seeing these orphans trying to survive life on the streets by banding together and begging on the trains is heart wrenching.

However, the film also shows that there is hope because of organizations such as Harvest India. Sadly, they can only help a small subset of the at risk youth in India. Which is exactly why these filmmakers chose to bring this project to fruition ~ so others can see the needs and possibly respond to the call for assistance.

I have to admit a weakness for a good, clean romance book. While I enjoy reading other genres, I find myself gravitating more towards these books at the moment. Or, maybe that’s just in my ‘book review’ life. It’s my love of a good story with romance that had me joining the Launch Team for Tricia Goyer’s latest novel, The Promise Box.

About The Promise Box

Every year, young Amish men descend on the cozy little town of West Kootenai, Montana, arriving in the spring to live there for six months and receive ‘resident’ status for the hunting season in the fall. They arrive as bachelors, but go home with brides! In The Promise Box, the second book of best-selling author Tricia Goyer’s Seven Brides for Seven Bachelors series, Lydia Wyse, a book editor from Seattle who grew up Amish, returns to the small community of West Kootenai to give comfort to her father after her mother’s death. She is drawn back to the familiar Amish ways after finding her mother’s most precious possession, a Promise Box of prayers and scripture. What her publisher sees, though, is an opportunity for a sensational ‘tell-all’ book about the Amish. Lydia soon finds herself falling in love with Amish bachelor Gideon Hooley. She wants nothing more than to forget her past and look forward to a future as an Amish bride. But will the pain of her childhood—and her potential betrayal of her community—keep her from committing her whole heart?

My Thoughts on The Promise Box

Having just read The Memory Jar (first in this series) last month, it felt like I was returning to the small community of West Kootenai after having been away for a few days. While I question that community’s ability to rival the great Alaskan wilderness, there is something appealing of the small town atmosphere and an environment which has you considering God’s hand in creation. Kudos to Ms. Goyer on selecting the setting for this particular series and for doing a wonderful job at describing it all.

As for the story, I found it interesting to have the protagonist ultimately write her story of returning to the Amish community. It’s really as if Lydia wrote it all down and then Ms. Goyer pulled it together for a final edit. Very interesting change of pace for how a story is written.

I loved the candid look at struggles faced when trying to re-embrace both her faith and community. And, how Lydia found love when she was neither expecting or looking for it. I truly believe that when we are open to God’s will we will find more than we could ever dream. That’s a big part of the message I got from this particular novel.

But the ‘icing’ on the cake is where the title comes from ~ the promise box. This precious gifts to Lydia from her mother contains so much wisdom between Scripture versus that reminded her mother of God’s promises and letters written to express her love. I can easily see a gift like this being priceless.

Other Tricia Goyer books I’ve reviewed:

What is Organic Gardening and Why Am I Considering It?

I suppose before considering why I would tackle organic gardening, it would be helpful to really define what I consider organic gardening to be.

Organic gardening is considered by many to be growing plants without the use of synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. That’s a great basic addition, however you can take it a step further by looking at the big picture and how those plants fit into the environment. Considering the growing environment means a careful look at the soil (including continual replenishing with organic material aka compost) and selecting plants that are best suited for the site.

As to why I want to pursue organic vegetable gardening instead of a traditional method, it can best be summed up as wanting the best quality food source for my family. I do not want to wonder if a chemical treatment leads to someone in the family becoming ill. And, honestly, the organic vegetables I have purchased just taste better. Why not get the best tasting produce I can at home for a fraction of the cost, too?

My Organic Gardening Plans

I have to admit that hubby is NOT one to shun any kind of helper (e.g. pesticides) that will get rid of a troublesome blight. So, this will be a challenge in our household and mean that I’m taking the lead to keep it all up.

To start off, I have been rethinking our backyard environment. When we lived back East, the garden was tilled in a sunny spot of the yard. Spring would have an image very much like the one below of teen son tilling his grandmother’s garden plot in New York.

But, that’s not the best method for us here in our spot of Alaska. We’ve tried and it’s mostly failed. Our dirt has a lot of rocks in it, which makes sense as it is the side of a mountain. That means I need to purchase a good organic soil to lay the foundation. Below is our garden spot during a thaw. Some soil was brought in to start it before we bought the house, but it’s in need of help.

I’m also vacillating at the moment between container gardening (which is a plus for some plants like tomatoes that are more cold sensitive and can then be moved indoors at night) and raised bed gardening. Most likely, I’ll be doing a combination of the two.

As for what to plant, I will be doing some things from seeds (e.g. peas and carrots) and others from plants (e.g. broccoli and tomatoes). I am also wanting to make a container garden of herbs to enhance my cooking with the hopes of keeping them indoors through most of the year. I can hardly wait for our local Home Depot to get the vegetable plants in stock so I can start the ball truly rolling.

Expectations are going to be kept modest, too. Although, I have to admit that some of the farmers up in the valley to our north get monster sized produce with the longer light cycles in summer. (I could make a LOT of zucchini bread with one that size!)

The movie tells the interwoven stories of Luke (T.J. Dalrymple) and Alé (Erin Bethea), who marry right after school and move to India to serve as missionaries for Embrace A Village, a ministry that cares for those afflicted with leprosy and their families; aspiring financier Catherine (Kate Cobb), who joins a prestigious financial institution determined to make an impact on corporate America; Ryder (Matthew Florida), who lands an impressive job in social media and can’t wait to use the powerful medium for a greater good; and Ethan (Shawn-Caulin Young,) seemingly the odd man out, who struggles to find his God-given-purpose and feels sidelined by God.

My Thoughts on This is Our Time : An Inspirational Christian Movie

I really enjoyed watching this film. I did screen it on my own, but plan to watch it again soon with the older boys. The message is quite powerful and really resonated with me. For me, the message is that God has a plan for our lives! How awesome is that? The challenge as Christians is remembering that fact even if our current situation seems awful or outside what our own dreams might be.

That message is driven home in the movie by the character Ethan as he sees his rejection from grad school as a personal affront and wonders why he’s ‘stuck’ helping run his family’s business. However, as is true to real life, an event happens that has him realizing that he needed to be at that place at that time.

Along with the overall message about everything being in God’s time to His plan, This is Our Time also introduces a worthwhile charity to the viewers. Embrace A Village is a ministry caring for those afflicted with leprosy and their families. With all the medical advances, some might find it shocking that this ostracizing disease still has a strong foothold in some areas of the world. I am very grateful that there are those willing to continually reach out and help those in need when most in society want to remain separate from them.

While this is definitely a family friendly film, I would say that the younger kids wouldn’t find it interesting or entertaining. However, I would recommend it for some junior high kids and definitely those in high school. One final comment…if you tend to tear up when bad things happen, make sure to have some tissues at the ready!

As I mentioned, we do not have the lovely granite or marble countertops this product will clean. However, we do have that stainless steel stove top that gets grimy and gross in quick order. After our recent trip, we came home to find the kitchen still a disaster zone (where were those cleaning fairies??) and in needs of some serious elbow grease. Soft Scrub® Advanced Surface made cleaning that stove top almost a joy.
