About QUEEN OF KATWE
Disney’s “Queen of Katwe” is based on the vibrant true story of Phiona Mutesi, a young girl from the streets of Kampala, Uganda whose world rapidly changes when she is introduced to the game of chess by soccer coach and former missionary Robert Katende., As a result of the support she receives from her family and community, Phinoa is instilled with the confidence and determination she needs to pursue her dream of becoming an international chess champion.
Phiona’s story is a powerful testament to the strength of the human spirit, and it all began when she came across Robert’s chess program in a makeshift Agape Church in Katwe. Two years later she became Uganda’s junior
chess champion and eventually, the national champion. Then in 2012 at the age of 16 at her second Olympiad, she became a Woman Candidate Master, the first step towards Grand Master.
Earlier this year Phiona graduated from St. Mbuga Vocational Secondary School. She is now applying to college and hopes to become a doctor or lawyer.
Directed by Mira Nair from a screenplay by William Wheeler, “Queen of Katwe” is produced by Lydia Dean Pilcher, p.g.a., and John Carls, p.g.a., with Will Weiske and Troy Buder serving as executive producers. The film stars Golden Globe® nominee David Oyelowo, Oscar® winner and Tony® nominee Lupita Nyong’o and newcomer Madina Nalwanga.

Inspired by QUEEN OF KATWE: Who is Your Unlikely Champion?
There are so many people in my life who are unlikely champions for different reasons. I thought it would be nice to mention a few of them and why they are champions.
First off is my friend Michelle who introduced me to Beachbody. She is constantly there to be a cheerleader as I struggle on the path to fitness. She doesn’t tell me what to do, but rather help me to negotiate choices so that health is the final result.
Then, there are my friends who have opened their home up to many children in the foster system here in Alaska. Many of them have gone from being foster parents to adoptive parents of children they fostered. Taking in someone else’s child and loving them like your own while providing a safe environment is not an easy task. One of those friends has gone even further by taking those with significant medical needs in the family. As much as we love our boys, we know that fostering is not something we can manage. However, I have so much respect for those who do.
Finally, there are so many friends who are in the homeschool community who are able to motivate me to keep going. Honestly, I would be here all day if trying to pick even just a few to feature. The beauty of this community is that we all inspire each other for different reasons.
