In August 2016, our family did something we’d never done before. We went on a family vacation!
The destination? The Big Island of Hawaii!
Now, anyone who has traveled with a decent sized family knows that a regular hotel room will be a bit cramped. Even when you don’t plan to spend most of your day indoors, you need some space to unwind.
The most affordable option was to visit (affiliate) HomeAway and find a multi-bedroom rental for our trip. While I might have saved a little bit of money by squeezing into a 2 bedroom unit with a pull out sofa, we opted for a larger 3 bedroom condo which meant everyone could be in a bedroom at night.
What You Get at 3 Bedroom at Waikoloa Colony Villas on Hawaii
The 3 Bedroom units offer about 1700 square feet of living space, which counts the lanais. We never felt cramped at all when we were in the unit. They offered cable TV which was mostly used by our teens. Had there been something we all wanted to watch, there is ample seating in the living room.
Some meals were eaten on the lanai off of the living space while others were at the dining table.
The kitchen had me envious with all the counter and cabinet space compared to my kitchen in Alaska. Just about all the basic cooking equipment is included. And, since it is Hawaii, there is a rice cooker in the unit!
The refrigerator unit is large which gave us plenty of space for shopping Costco style for our family of 6.
And, everyone had a spot to sleep without using the pull-out air mattress. The master bedroom with its own bath was perfect for my husband and I. Hooray for a king sized bed!
Within the community, there were 2 pools for use. Close to us was also a tennis court and the building housing the fitness centers. My eldest son was thrilled to see free weights and machines that allowed him to do some basic routines on the trip.
The particular unit we stayed in is owned by another Alaskan family. How cool is that!!
There are several units rented in Waikoloa Colony Villas. Just search (affiliate) HomeAway for them!

Knowing that seeing things in motion can help some people, I took the time to walk through the unit as well as the main amenities to better showcase what you’ll find.
