An increase in longevity means that more people are living to an age where life can become more challenging. With more people living into their 80s and 90s, there is a growing trend of parents moving into their child’s house.
Sometimes they are still quite self-sufficient, but other times they need help. In those cases, the child becomes the caregiver.
Ah, the new circle of life!
Caregiving in a Nutshell
I’ve heard a few people joke about how it all starts to fall apart when you turn 40, and several of us who are past that milestone birthday do nudge each other with mild complaints of aches and pains.
But, the struggle faced by those our age who are now caregivers goes beyond the simple aches and pains.
Rather, an elderly parent or another relative who you’ve welcomed into your home may need help in several areas.
Often times there is medication to manage.
Sometimes they are unsteady on their feet and need a cane or walker to stay mobile.
And then there is the issue of incontinence which means a need for adult sized diapers. I’m sure the embarrassment for that goes both ways. Purchasing the products online is another great option that allows for discreet shipping and convenient delivery.
None of it is fun. I know my own parents would love to reduce the number of medications they have to take.
But, thousands of people are living this life right now out of love for the other.
While my parents and in-laws are still living independently, I know there may come a time when we welcome them into our home. And when that happens, I want to be prepared with all we need so the whole family can enjoy each other.
Caregiving Can Be Hard. Buying Necessities Should Be Easy.
When it comes to having the house stocked, Sam’s Club Family Caregiving makes it easy.
Sam’s Club can be your one-stop shopping place for all that you need. The Member’s Mark brand provides premium quality products at a great value. While picking up items for caregiving needs, you can stock the kitchen and fill your prescriptions at the club pharmacy saving you time.
Recently, I visited our local Sam’s Club for a few must-have items in the Pharmacy section. Member’s Mark ibuprofen and Vitamin D3 (a necessity with the shortening days here in Alaska) were on my list for the day. Right near the window of the pharmacy, I saw boxes of Member’s Mark Premium Adult Washcloths 240 ct. That’s a product many households can use and one that I was happy to pick up.
Caregiving: Medication Sheet
For over a decade, I taught First Aid and CPR courses. One tip I always shared was to keep a running list of ALL medications you take, whether they are a prescription or over the counter. That way if something happens, you or a designated individual can share it with emergency personnel.
With that thought in mind, I came up with a Medication Sheet for Caregivers. There are 2 identical pages, so you can print double-sided and then put the sheet (or sheets) into page protectors.
Thanks to Member’s Mark and Sam’s Club, I am ready in my house.
I know that when I can pick up what I need in one trip, I am a happier person.
Shopping can be a fun diversion at times or difficult at other times.
I’d much rather spend my time with those I love than worrying about what we need to have on hand.
Watching my boys build strong bonds with their grandparents is definitely top of my list!
