While I do not share all the Disney information that comes my way, I am a HUGE fan. I spent a little time this past weekend following all the social media activity generated from D23 EXPO. Along with tons of Disney fun, there were announcements of upcoming movies from Walt Disney Studios, Marvel and Pixar. I thought it would be fun to share about the ones our family is MOST excited to see.
While I am sharing material from press releases I was sent, you won’t see every single project featured here. It’s all about what we really want to see!
Marvel’s CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR (#Captain America & #CivilWar)
If there is one thing guaranteed for someone like me who lives surrounded by boys, a serious love of super heroes in the house is it. Good thing I happen to love them, too. My youngest son has adored Hulk for years (“’cause he’s green and smashes things”), but since watching the last Avengers movie at the theater he has started to gravitate towards Captain America (aka “Cap” in our house.) So, off course, this movie is on our list.
Marvel’s CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR picks up where “Avengers: Age of Ultron” left off, as Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.
The movie stars Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Emily VanCamp, Don Cheadle, Jeremy Renner, Chadwick Boseman, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Rudd, Frank Grillo, Tom Holland, with William Hurt and Daniel Brühl. Marvel’s CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR opens in the U.S. on May 6, 2016.
FINDING DORY (#FindingDory)
We LOVED Finding Nemo. We loved it in the movie theater (with son #3 sitting on my lap for most of it) on a warm summer day while visiting my mom. We enjoy watching it in our home at least once or twice a year. I’d heard that a sequel featuring Dory was in the works and they shared more about it at D23. The all-new story reunites Dory with friends Nemo and Marlin on a search for answers about her past. What can she remember? Who are her parents? And where did she learn to speak Whale?
Ellen DeGeneres (“The Ellen DeGeneres Show”), returns as the voice of everyone’s favorite forgetful blue tang, along with other familiar actors like Ed O’Neill (“Modern Family”), who lends his voice to Hank, a cantankerous octopus; Ty Burrell (“Modern Family”), the voice of Bailey, a misguided beluga whale; and Kaitlin Olson (“Always Sunny in Philadelphia”), who voices Destiny, a kind-hearted whale shark. Also featuring the voices of Albert Brooks, Eugene Levy and Diane Keaton, Disney·Pixar’s FINDING DORY swims into theaters June 17, 2016.
PETE’S DRAGON (#PetesDragon)
One of my favorite films from Disney during the 1970s was Pete’s Dragon. I loved the integration of live action with animation. The music was fun and the lighthouse setting was fabulous. Just writing about it makes me want to watch it again.
This re-imagining of the original film keeps the same adventure store of an orphaned boy named Pete and his best friend Elliott, who just so happens to be a dragon. PETE’S DRAGON opens in U.S. theaters on August 12, 2016.
Marvel’s DOCTOR STRANGE (#DoctorStrange)
I haven’t a clue beyond this is Marvel and as far as my boys are concerned that’s all they need to know.
Kevin Feige led off with a glimpse into the world of Marvel’s DOCTOR STRANGE, featuring a video greeting by Benedict Cumberbatch, who stars as the title character, followed by a pre-production piece that offered fans a taste of the look and feel of the upcoming film, opening in U.S. theaters on October 26, 2016.
I really enjoyed the Hawaiian setting for Lilo & Stitch and suspect that I will adore this new animated feature film, too. There is just something about an island setting that gives me a warm fuzzy feeling inside.
Dwayne Johnson (“San Andreas,” “Furious 7,” HBO’s “Ballers”), will lendhis voice to the mighty demi-god Maui in Walt Disney Animation Studios’ MOANA which tells the tale of a spirited teenager who sets out to prove herself a master wayfinder. Expect to see an integration of the rich history and traditions of the South Pacific along with music inspired by the culture. MOANA sails into U.S. theaters on November 23, 2016.
STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS (#StarWars & #TheForceAwakens) / ROGUE ONE (#RogueOne)
If you asked me to name a film series with some serious staying power that I could watch over and over without complaint, then Star Wars is one that would pop to mind. I can still remember waiting outside a theater in the Seattle area to see the original film. I remember watching the clouds as we stoop in line and then how I left the theater in complete awe. And, this gal just might have had a serious crush going on for Harrison Ford through middle and high school. (Truth be told, I’d probably turn into a babbling idiot if I was ever in a room with him.)
I shared earlier this year about Episode VII, STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, which releases on December 18, 2015. My boys and I are really looking forward to it.
At D23 EXPO they announced the release schedule for the subsequent movies in the saga: STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII, on May 26, 2017 and STAR WARS: EPISODE IX, which is scheduled for release in 2019.
TOY STORY 4 / TOY STORY 20th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION (#ToyStory4)
Where did 20 years go?? I still remember watching Toy Story before the boys were born and then with them alongside me at home. Woody and Buzz have a place in so many hearts, mine included. So many classic toys, plus a few that were more modern, but all with a underlying current of imagination on overdrive as the toys came to life when people left the room.
Pixar Animation Studios marks the 20th Anniversary of TOY STORY this year. Said Lasseter, “All the characters from ‘Toy Story’—especially Woody and Buzz—are so close to us. They seem more like family members than just creations. Not only do we dearly love the characters, but we also love the world of ‘Toy Story’—the world where toys come to life when people are not in the room has always been rich with many story possibilities.”
Lasseter, who’s one of Pixar’s three founders, celebrated 20 years since TOY STORY transformed the animation industry and the art of storytelling. TOY STORY 4, will be a little different as it is a love story about a relationship between Woody and Bo Peep. It is slated for release on June 16, 2017.
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES (#PiratesOfTheCaribbean)
Everyone in my family loves the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise of films. I remember eagerly anticipating the first film as I was curious how they would take a favorite Disney park ride and make it into a full blown story line.
Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea…including him. Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.
Sadly, we have a LONG wait as PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES releases in U.S. theaters on July 7, 2017.
There are the movies MY family is anticipating.
Which ones are on your must see list?
