Patriotic Movies to Enjoy at Home

I have been, or can be if you click on a link and make a purchase, compensated via a cash payment, gift, or something else of value for writing this post. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

I have to admit that when I started to compose this post I was feeling at a loss of what to write.  I try my best to share things that appeal across the ages, but this particular post has mostly films for your teens and adults to watch.  I guess the side effect of having all boys is that films about war seem to be high on their list for viewing and hence top of mind for me. This is just a small sampling of patriotic movies to enjoy at home, whether streaming or on DVD.

Celebrate American Holidays with one of these patriotic movies based in American History

Movies to Rouse Your Patriotic Spirit for Younger Family Members

This is America, Charlie Brown! is a great way to get a little American history into them. You can read more about it in a previous review.

Liberty’s Kids  is a wonderful animated show from PBS that shows the American Revolution through the eyes of kids. One of them is an American colonist, another is an English reporter and the third is from France.  The show is both entertaining and educational.

The Patriot ~ the name pretty much sums up this movie starring Mel Gibson. His character is actually a compilation of many patriotic citizens forced into joining the battle during the American Revolution. His decision to act was less on the desire to separate from England than it was to protect his family and way of life. Be warned that there are some rather violent scenes. We allowed my then 10th-grade son to watch this movie as part of his American History studies.

1776 ~ now classic film about the American Revolution. If you or your family members can’t stand musicals, then this isn’t for you.  But, if you want your American Revolution story paired with song, check it out.

Gettysburg ~ this movie takes the 3 day battle of Gettysburg and reenacts it with incredible precision.  This Civil War film is not short, so plan on taking a break or splitting it between 2 viewings.

Glory is another Civil War movie that really drives home the loss faced by men who joined the battle.  This particular movie focuses upon the first black regiment to fight for the North in a war many considered to be about ending slavery.

If you cross history with some romance, you’ll find Pearl Harbor.  This is definitely one for entertainment, but you can still find that patriotic spirit seeing the characters pulled apart for the sake of Uncle Sam.

American Sniper ~ this is truly one of the most moving films I’ve seen and patriotism is a theme throughout it.  If you want a modern day movie to rouse your patriotic spirit, this very well could be it. You can read more of my thoughts about American Sniper in a previous review.
