Tech tools have come a long way from my own days as a student. I still remember the old computers that needed a boot disc in to do anything and then you were doing simple tasks written in the BASIC language. By the time I was graduating from college, the rise of computer labs for word processing or use in laboratory research was beginning. I felt almost ahead of the curve as my early adopting father passed along his old Commodore 64 for me to use after he bought the 128.
If you visit a classroom today, you’ll find a variety of technology available. In my son’s elementary school, they have a few Macs in each classroom as well as a mini-lab at the library which is used to teach basic keyboarding and for online research in a heavily filtered environment. This year, iPads made there way into the 5th and 6th grade classrooms. One of the 6th grade class projects was to make short videos expanding upon their country project boards that were tagged to specific photos on their poster board displays. So long as you had the app open and the designated cue in sight, you could then see the student telling you more than what they had on the board. That’s one way to help bring learning to life!
Even in my home school, we are using laptops and iPads for a decent portion of our work. As much as I might be a pen and paper kind of gal, the reality is that kids need tools to prepare for life in modern society. Computers and tablets of all kinds are found in the workplace today and knowing how to utilize the devices is a part of education.
