Summertime typically means warmer temperatures and the quest for refreshing items to help moderate the heat of the day.  Even in Alaska, we can get some warm days that have me longing for a cool, refreshing item.  Our family has been taste testing different smoothies with almond milk on our quest to find a few favorites for just such a time.

Smoothies with Almond Milk ~ Finding the Perfect Base

Just about any smoothie my boys and I adore have a creamy base.  In the past few years, I’ve moved away from using a lot of milk as I was seeing some negative effects on my health.  I’ve since transitioned to using almond milk in many of my smoothies when I want that creamy texture without having the added dairy in my diet.

While I have been happy with just unsweetened almond milk, I was really intrigued by a few new options from Silk: Silk Almond Coconut Blend AND Silk Almondmilk Protein + Fiber.

So many friends have raved about their being benefits to coconut in your diet.  And, I know that the combination of protein and fiber makes a big, positive impact on me.

Silk Almond Coconut Blend is a lower calorie option with only 35 calories per cup.

Silk Almondmilk Protein + Fiber comes in higher (90 calories for original or 100 calories for vanilla), but those calories include 5 grams of protein as well as a bit of sugar.

Each of the containers even have a suggested recipe for that particular blend along with the suggestion to visit the Silk website for more ideas.

For the last 2 years, I have had a similar breakfast pretty much every day of the week.  I joined the fitness and nutrition bandwagon and have a daily meal replacement shake that’s high in protein and packed full of nutrition.

Typically, I have it at breakfast as I love how it fills me, provides plenty of energy, and takes little thought when still trying to wake up.  But, I’ve been known to swap things up and have it later in the day.

As variety is important to me, I might have chocolate as my base each day yet change up what I put into the blender.  Some of the recipes I use can get so thick (especially with the Silk Almondmilk Protein + Fiber as it is thicker on its own) that I am left with something requiring a spoon to consume.

Who doesn’t like ice cream for breakfast?

Here’s how I make this particular meal replacement.

  2. Add almond butter and blend on low for a few seconds to incorporate.

Notes

My personal preference for a meal replacement shake is Shakeology from Beachbody.
Depending upon how many strawberries you use, a spoon might be needed for this one!

Smoothies with Almond Milk ~ Afternoon Delights

While my 4 year old adores the chocolate almond strawberry smoothie I make for breakfast some mornings, the other boys wanted to test out a few new recipes.  We found several on the Silk website and picked just a few to give a test hop recently.

Chocolate Covered Cherry Smoothie and Berry Mint Chocolate Bliss Smoothie are the 2 which the boys and I selected to try from the Silk website as well as the Choconut Smoothie from the back of the Silk Almond Coconut Blend container.

We modified the berry mint chocolate bliss smoothie to use a tiny bit of peppermint essential oil instead of the mint leaf originally called for in the recipe and I used 1/2 tsp. of almond butter instead of almonds. Also, as there is some sugar in the Silk Almondmilk Protein + Fiber, I didn’t use as much maple syrup.

Smoothies with Almond Milk Taste Test Preparations

After giving everyone little cups of the different smoothies, the boys put it to the test.  For my 10 and 13 year olds, the Choconut Smoothie was their favorite.  Neither one could taste the coconut with the banana and chocolate being the flavors they readily detected.  My 4 year old declared that he was in love with the Chocolate Covered Cherry Smoothie.  I completely agree with him!

  1. I have never had almond milk before. I have heard a lot of people say that they use this. The smoothie sounds like it would be very good. Does it have an almond taste?

    1. Just responding now, Stacie! I don’t think the almond milk tastes lthat much like almonds, but there’s probably a hint to it. I never use it plain, so that makes it harder to tell.

  2. These look really really good. I have been thinking I should try going dairy free to see if I will feel better. Looks like some yummy alternatives.

  3. Love to use Almond Milk as a base to my smoothies! So yummy and love the added protein. I also use coconut water in place of water for all of my smoothies to get extra natural electrolytes!

  4. Typically our smoothies are made with little to no dairy in them. We prefer the Hawaiian way of making smoothies which is frozen fruit with a tad bit of juice or coconut water. On a hot day, there is nothing like a pure fruit smoothie!
