My friend, Debra, has decided to start back her weekly link up for Read Aloud Challenge on her blog, Footprints in the Butter. Up until this school year, we did read alouds in spurts for what we were learning with the vast majority of reading aloud being focused up J with picture books.
However, we are using Sonlight this year for American History and Core D&E has selections to be read aloud every single day for the middle boys.
Somehow my being sidetracked with things like power outages and illness in September has us still a few weeks behind from my original plans for the school year. Thankfully (for me!), the main read aloud book for the weeks we are doing was available in audiobook format at the base library. That means we can listen while I do things like grading their other schoolwork or prepping for dinner at the same time. We can even bring it with us in the car when we do our errands. I really love (and appreciate) audiobooks!
Johnny Tremain is from our history reading and we’ve just started it. I don’t recall reading this when I was younger, so I’m hearing it alongside the boys for the first time, too. I love to read historical fiction and get a glimpse into the struggles and challenges faced by people in a different time period.
Our Lady of Guadalupe by Tomie de Paola fits with the Catholic history we have going on (or should I say trying to have going on in our house?) Love, love, love Tomie de Paola. Some day I need to get my author unit study pulled together to share here, too.
The Oxford Illustrated Book of American Children’s Poems is another history/ literature read aloud from Sonlight. The boys grumble a bit about doing this. My approach is to read at the dinner table as hubby will then tell the boys that hearing poetry is a good thing for their education. (Now I wonder how loud they’d balk if I had them memorize some poems!)
