Speekee for Fun and Easy Spanish Learning

A few years ago, our family was introduced to Speekee for learning Spanish in a fun, immersion manner.  J loved it so much that we bought it on DVD and then purchased a region-free DVD player that would play the discs.  We’ve watched them in spurts as he’s requested them, but haven’t done much beyond watching the segments until recently.

Speekee uses a mixture of children filmed on location in Spain with puppets to teach Spanish in an immersion approach.   Each video has a theme (e.g. El Cafe, El Zoo, etc.) with consistency in format, including some rather catchy music.  This repetition within each program helps the kids to learn key words and phrases in a fun manner.  Children ages toddler through elementary grades form the primary audience for this resource.

This round of reviewing Speekee TV for the TOS Homeschool Crew included access to the new FastTrack for homeschoolers. FastTrack lays out a 40 week suggested schedule for your preschool through early elementary students that incorporates the 10 Speekee videos along with different activities. Some of the suggested activities draw from the printables that had already been available with Speekee TV in the past. However, they pulled from suggestions by parents for things they did with their kids to make it both fun and educational to really expand their learning opportunities and reinforce the vocabulary learned through Speekee.

I think that J (who’s now being considered a preschooler in our house) is finding Speekee to be not only a fun diversion for his afternoon, but a way to continually build vocabulary.  The other boys have also shown that being exposed to the video segment.  I’m starting to consider having them work with J on a regular basis instead of me as everyone involved will benefit.  I will admit that we are going a bit slower on the weekly schedule with J.  However, for an older child (e.g. D who’s now in 4th grade) you could easily do 2 or 3 ‘weeks’ of FastTrack activities and see progress in their learning.
