DelMonte for Healthy Snacking #Snacks4WimpyKid #CBIAS

Even though the boys and I spend almost the entire day together since we homeschool, I am always on the lookout for ways to have ‘family time’ in the afternoons, evenings and weekends.  One of the boys’ favorite things to do as a family is movie night.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid has been one of the book and movie series that we’ve thoroughly enjoyed as a family.  Any way you slice it, this series is downright funny.  The boys get a glimpse at what life might be like if they attended a brick and mortar school (although P is old enough to remember going through 3rd grade and would concur that he saw similar situations then.)  And, I love that the mom is always trying to do what is best for her boys.

One of the areas that I am constantly striving to do better in for the sake of my family is healthy snacks.  The boys quickly get into a rut with graham crackers or cheese sticks.  Fruit is something that we enjoy.  However, fresh produce in Alaska can either be good (with a high price tag) or literally rot shortly after you buy it.  Shelf-stable options are fantastic for up here.  And, Del Monte’s fruit cup snacks are a great option to not only provide a healthy snack, but allow us to bring them if we are on the go for meetings or cooperative learning opportunities.  They’d even make a perfect pre-movie snack!

I was pleasantly surprised with the nice selection our local Wal-mart had available.

We had an afternoon of family time with some drawing plus the chance to eat one of the delicious and healthy snack cups.

DOWAK Books and Del Monte Fruit Cups Set the Stage

The drawing was specifically driven as the boys each tried their hands at drawing our family in the stick figure style the Diary of a Wimpy Kid uses.  We pulled the copies of the books we own so the boys could check out the style before attempting to draw our family on their own.

It didn’t take long for the boys to start drawing.  They all love to doodle and the idea that they can enter their drawings into a contest helped them focus their energy on the task at hand.

I even tried my hand at drawing the family.  Below is my drawing with P’s on the right.  You can see his close up in the next photo.

When it came time for their snack, most of the boys went for the peaches.  P was all about the mandarin oranges.  R was diligently drawing and set his peaches aside to finish his family portrait.

I couldn’t get over the low calorie count on those peaches and might be squirreling the rest of them away for me!

You can also have fun drawing your family to submit for the Del Monte DOWAK contest.  Visit the DOWAK Facebook page to find out how to enter.  We’re submitting ours and the boys think it would be a hoot to win a prize.   And, the boys are really looking forward to seeing the newest Diary of a Wimpy Kid movie, too!
