Today I’m back with another Christian romance. I’m really beginning to love reading this genre of books as they tend to be quick and entertaining reads. My latest read in this genre is Wish You Were Here.
About the Book:
Allison Denman is supposed to get married in five days, but everything is all wrong. The huge wedding. The frothy dress. And the groom. Still, kissing the groom’s brother in an unguarded moment is decidedly not the right thing to do. How could she have made such a mistake? It seems Allison’s life is nothing but mistakes at this point. And pulling a “Runaway Bride” complete with stealing, er, borrowing her best friend’s car doesn’t seem to solve her problems. Can Allison find her way out of this mess? Maybe she just needs to stop orchestrating everything. Allison prefers being the one in control, and giving it up is not going to be easy. But to find her way again, she will have to believe that God has a plan for her and find the strength to let Him lead.
About the Author:
Beth K. Vogt provides her readers with a happily ever after woven through with humor, reality, and God’s lavish grace. She’s a non-fiction author and editor who said she’d never write fiction. She’s the wife of an Air Force physician (now in solo practice) who said she’d never marry a doctor-or anyone in the military. She’s a mom of four who said she’d never have kids. Beth has discovered that God’s best often waits behind the doors marked “Never.” She writes contemporary romance because she believes there’s more to happily ever after than the fairy tales tell us. Beth earned a journalism degree from San Jose State University and met her husband Rob when he knocked her down at a karate studio. They’ve been married for 31 years. They have four children, ranging in ages from 28, 25, 23 and – thanks to a funny thing happening on their way to the empty nest-a 10-year-old. The Vogt Team, which now includes a “daughter-in-love” and “son-in-love,” enjoys hiking and camping in Colorado. Read more about Beth at her website:http://bethvogt.com
My Thoughts ~
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel. I kept thinking about the movie, Runaway Bride, which was also referenced a few times in the course of the story. I also found myself thinking back to my own wedding day and how there was a moment where I asked myself if this is what I truly should be doing and the man I should be marrying. It can be so easy to get caught up in the trappings of the day and doing what you think others expect you to do. In the case of my big day with Mr. O, there was no lingering doubt and no desire to flee from the church.
But, I had experienced a call to discern a relationship and walk away a few years earlier when an epiphany had me realizing the person I was engaged to was not the person I was meant to marry. That time of my life came to mind during an early scene when Allison’s best friend tells her that the choice to leave Alex at the altar was the best choice she could have made as her betrothed was not viewed as the best choice for her husband.
One touch I have to mention about this story is the inclusion of little postcard writings at the start of each chapter to Alli from Daniel (the groom’s brother that she kisses before the wedding day.) Just the regular communication from him over the years and her creation of a board with all the postcards showed a wonderful relationship filled with love.
The other thing that struck me is how the characters are often trying to figure it all out on their own rather than seeking what God’s will is. Through a ‘fun’ story, it can strike a reader that staying busy and worrying about what others think can lead to frustration. But, finding time for God can be a challenge. (However, the rewards are worth it in the long run!)
All in all, this is a great, quick read that would be a perfect addition to your summer reading pile. You can purchase the book, retails for $14.99.
