In some ways, I feel the need to hang my head in shame. I selected something to give up for Lent and then did not abstain from it on Saturday.
Yep, I had a small cup of coffee… caffeinated even. I’ve been battling clogged sinuses for weeks now and a little bit of warm, caffeinated coffee seems to help in a medicinal manner. So, I broke down and had that partial cup to help with my head. And, for a short while it definitely helped me feel better.
Now, I am all for picking oneself up and starting anew. And, I am not going to berate myself for falling in this chosen path.
Instead, I am now wondering if sacrificing coffee is what I really NEED to be doing.
Self-sacrifice is a good way to help put the focus where it needs to be. But, just giving up something (in my case coffee) is not the end goal of Lent. Instead, it is about changing our hearts and preparing for Easter. Does skipping coffee in the morning help me to better seek God in my life? Or are there other things that would be a better sacrifice to help me develop a deeper relationship with God?
So, I am going to be praying over whether giving up coffee is what God is leading me to do. And, as the consummate homeschooling parent I am, I won’t balk at changing from the planned course when there is a better path to follow. If there is one thing I’ve learned, when we listen and follow the rewards can be great.
