I can hardly believe I am penning the last TOS Homeschool Crew review for this ‘school’ year. Time sure flies when you aren’t paying attention.
Read for the Heart is a book published by Apologia Press to help guide parents in selecting the best books for their children to read. Penned by Sarah Clarkson, a homeschool graduate, the approach is of someone who has grown up surrounded by great books and an environment where reading is loved.
Rather than just a list of recommended books, Read for the Heart starts with chapters looking at how crucial reading is to our personal development and where it stands in America today. The chapter on the state of reading in America was particularly interesting to me. One thing that stuck out was how addictive TV viewing can be for all of us. Not only does our brain become more ‘passive’, but there is a surge of endorphins to make us ‘feel good’ about it!
Ms. Clarkson then continues on to suggest how you can create an environment where your children will become life-long readers. Beyond helping a child learn to read, you need to make reading fun and accessible. I sure hope that I have done a good job of those tasks with my boys. (Although a little less TV and video games wouldn’t hurt!)
Once the background has been set, she does share some of her personal favorites in different categories of books. The suggestions are grouped by author and sometimes only list a few of many great writings by each author. While I was familiar with most of the suggestions, I can say that there were a few I had not seen before.
If you are seeking an extensive list of book suggestions, especially for an older child, then this is not the book for you. But, if you want a great launch pad for creating life-long readers, this could be a great book for you. And, the approximately 1,000 book suggestions might keep you busy for a while.
Read for the Heart retails for $17 and can be ordered directly from Apologia. On that page, you can view the Table of Contents as well as a sample chapter.
