My boys love to draw. Some days you have to practically rip pen and paper from their hands in an attempt to redirect attention to other schoolwork.
When given the chance to review a Christian art program on DVD, I eagerly waved my hands saying ‘pick me!’ Our opportunity to review Vol. 1 of See the Light’s art class only wet our appetite for more lessons.
Volume 1 has 4 lessons on it, each lasting approximately 15 minutes:
Tools of the Trade
It All Starts with a Line
Contours & Composition
Draw What You See
Master Artist Pat Knepley provides the instruction and does a great job engaging most of my boys in wanting to learn more. While some of the concepts presented on this disc were already familiar, I did not have a loud level of complaints coming at me. Instead, the middle two boys were more than happy to watch and see someone SHOW them how to do something.
I have to wonder if sometimes the fluid action of another person doing something on the screen isn’t a better fit for some aspects of art. I know there are plenty of things that seemed easier to learn when I could have someone demonstrating it for me compared to just reading from a text. And, up to this point, most of the boys art instruction has been through crafts or books discussing and illustrating concepts.
Something I really appreciated as a homeschool mother is that See the Light has most of the lessons using just basic pencil, eraser and paper. I also appreciate the integration of art history into any study of making art. And, for most Christians, the incorporation of Biblical truths will be welcomed.
At the moment, you can request your own copy of Vol. 1 on DVD to see how your family enjoys this program. Or, you can watch the first three lessons as streaming video. If you like what you see, there are two options for purchasing right now. You can purchase the set of 9 DVDs with a total of 36 lessons, enough for a year of art classes, for $99. Alternatively, you can subscribe to the lessons as streaming video for the rate of $10 per month. (You get access to 4 lessons per month, so the total cost for all 36 lessons would be $90 over 9 months.)
