There is something about springtime that brings out the need to get organized in me. Maybe it is the cold winter months where I am more concerned about staying warm than what the house looks like that keeps me from feeling that urge earlier. Although, the flip side is that when I spend more time at home I see all the things that drive me batty. You know what I mean… piles of paper with no where to go, boxes of things that have no home, or the debris the kids leave behind when pulling out tons of toys that get left behind.
Whatever the cause, I have got the bug and am feeling the desire to get some CALM out of the CHAOS. At least, that’s what I plan to do once the taxes are filed!
Well, I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to read a new book out there to help me let go of perfectionist tendencies and find a way to be organized so life flows better. Pretty Neat the buttoned-up way to get organized & let go of perfection is the complete title of this compact book. Alicia Rockmore and Sarah Welch, the creators of buttoned up Organizational Products, co-author this title.
I have to admit that the first part of the book seemed to better fit my days of full time employment where there was more to juggle. Well, that’s what I was thinking until I thought about all I do between being a full time mother AND homeschooling the boys. Adding in some volunteer ‘jobs’ as well as the occasional per diem assignment made me realize that even I could benefit from better time management. Otherwise, I have strings of days where I feel little was accomplished and hubby might wonder if I don’t just eat those bon-bons while watching soap operas all day.
Then I got to the sections about clutter.
- Paper clutter…yep, got plenty of that here.
- Kid clutter (aka mountains of toys and boxes with assorted pieces and parts I can’t bear to throw out)….plenty of that around this house.
- Taming the email inbox….boy do I need to do that! I’ve got multiple emails and they all have hundred to thousands of unread messages vying for my attention!
Now, you would think that after a massive purge prior to our move from Maryland I would have taken control of the clutter monster. Nope, those pack rate tendencies do NOT go away and we moved with more stuff than I was hoping. That’s what an earlier than anticipated arrival of Little J did for me. I think I had less than 2 weeks from when Mr. O got the job offer to when Little J was born. I got rid of a bunch then and when we moved out of the rental house almost 2 months later. But, it was not as much as I would have liked. Add in some garage sales this summer plus the free shelf at our charter school and you get the picture of how quickly things can multiply.
Finally, if getting your priorities set to then come up with a good schedule followed by clutter busting isn’t enough…they tackle the subject of cooking. Yes, cooking real food instead of relying on processed stuff. That’s just the chapter I needed to read after selecting jambalaya from Zatarains boxes instead of homemade. Only so many hours in the day, if you know what I mean. (And, I DO make mostly whole foods including our bread!) So I squished any guilt that might have appeared and took comfort in the fact we had a yummy Fat Tuesday dinner that was easy to make.
Overall, this is a great resource to help kick start your stalled efforts. I know that just reading through the title has me revved up to bust the clutter and take control of how I spend my days.
