After we returned home from our first day of co-op, I realized that today is the First Friday of the month. Back in Ohio and Maryland, that would mean we’d have adoration and fellowship with other homeschoolers. But, at the moment I have not had energy to get something like that together in our area.
No….the First Friday also means it’s time for Field Trip Friday at Live the Adventure.
So, I am quickly typing up our entry into this fun meme.
Towards the end of January, our family joined several others from the FREE at Home group at Great Harvest Bread Company in Anchorage for a tour. While you can see almost the entire operation by looking past the counter, the kids were able to go behind the counter and learn a little more about how bread is made.
Now, since we are making our own bread starting with grinding our own grain, my older boys ‘amazed’ the tour guide by saying so. She showed everyone some wheat berries and talked about how they are ground into the flour. Then, they got to see a brick of yeast (not the loose stuff I get at Sam’s Club.) Several of the younger kids were amazed that yeast makes things grow bigger. Not my boys, though.
Then, the kids rolled up sleeves and could form a chunk of dough into whatever shape they wanted to be baked. Once the individual loaves went into the oven, the group came back around the counter to enjoy a slice of cinnamon chip bread. They were also given bags containing a small handful of wheat berries they can grow, a group photo shot taken before they began the tour, and a coupon for a free loaf of bread.
My boys were elated at that point. They had great bread in their tummy, a toasty warm ‘loaf’ of honey whole wheat to munch on in the car, and a coupon to come back another time for whatever loaf they want.
Enjoy some snapshots from our time there!

Oh what fun! Thatbrings back so many memories! We got to do that with my stepson when he was little! It sounds like you had a great time. That trip was what got me into making bread at home, but can't wait to learn about milling our own flower!

Sounds like you could've hosted this field trip in your home! You grind your own flour and bake your own bread? I am in awe of you.
I've wanted to make our own bread for quite some time but now I'm positive that the day for me to begin doing so is fast approaching. I found a pack of hamburger buns in our pantry that I'd forgotten about. The sale date was Dec. 19th and here we are a month and a half after that date and there is not one speck of mold! I couldn't believe it. I never want to eat store bought bread again! Thanks for linking up to Field Trip Friday! Blessings!
