A few weeks back I mentioned that I was going to be reviewing a new book titled Stop Reacting and Start Responding™ as part of the new Living My MoMent program. At the time of that post, I had only read the first bit of the book. However, I could tell that it held promise.
Lately, I do feel like I am more into knee jerk reactions when the boys misbehave. In the short term, it seems easier to discipline through removal of privileges. Or, I find myself hovering on the verge of my own tantrum over their bad behavior. Neither of those approaches are working and at least one of the boys think the house should be the new locale for “Lord of the Flies.”
So, this book has been quite timely for me to refocus my attention and efforts. The chapters are broken down into smaller segments. None of the segments is more than a couple of pages with the key points reiterated as a summary. No excuses about this resource being unapproachable or too cumbersome to get through from me.
Now, what Ms. Silver has to share is not some new magic bullet approach to parenting. Instead, it is a compilation of ideas with some being directly attributed to other parenting ‘gurus.’
If there is a complaint for me, it is in wanting more examples of the tips in action. Some do show a sample conversation between parent and child. But, most of the examples seem so tame compared to what I deal with on occasion. Of course, if I had fully solved all of the issues with the boys before they turned 5 I might not be facing some of the ones we keep having.
As I am a firm believer in starting fresh to tackle my problems, I am going to do my best to implement some of the ideas in this book. From past experience, I know that change is often met with resistance and that equates to more bad behaviors before the good comes. It’s just going to require that much more persistence and consistency on my part to ride through the storm and enjoy the rewards on the back end.
Purchasing the book is quick and easy. In softbound format, the book retails for $12.95. You can also get it in pdf format for $9.95. (I was able to pull the pdf format over to my Nook with no problem for reading.)
You can catch Sharon Silver every Wednesday on Mom TV where she shares her parenting tips as well as answers questions from the chat room. It airs at 1 p.m. EST, so that puts it at 9 a.m. for me. While that is usually when we are full swing for our homeschool day, I do plan to occasionally hop over and maybe get a new way of dealing with the boys.
Other ways to connect with Ms. Silver include her Facebook page and Twitter.
