2011-2012 Plans

Below you will find my plans for each child with regard to learning at home.  Keep in mind that things are always a work in progress at our house.  Between TOS Homeschool Crew reviews and just needing to meet a child’s needs, we have been known to try something new and set something else aside for a while.
Core Classes
Language Arts (Grammar, Phonics, Reading and Spelling)
All boys ~ read titles for appropriate grade level in the Alaskan Battle of the Books. They may ‘compete’ in January at the local IDEA office; Reading Comprehension ‘worksheets’ from ABC Teach, Spelling City and other resources.
P and R ~ Complete Student Writing Intensive A and possibly move into the continuation course (level B)
P ~ most likely he’ll be enrolled through Write at Home for writing this year, just so someone else grades his assignments for that subject!  Otherwise, we’ll move into SWICC Level B.  Excellence in Literature 1 plus Mirrors & Windows textbook for literature.
R ~ Junior Analytical Grammar; Mirrors and Windows Level 1; All About Spelling; Writing Tales 2
D ~ Houghton Mifflin’s Reading books for third grade; All About Spelling; Writing Tales 1
R & D are both using Time 4 Learning primarily for Language Arts, but also dabble in other core subjects with it.
Math
All boys ~ ALEKS, Mathletics, Quarter Mile Math, Life of Fred and other resources to supplement learning
P ~  Math U See Pre-Algebra and Algebra I
R ~ finish Math U See Delta then move into Epsilon
D ~ finish Math U See Gamma then move into Delta
Religion
All boys continue to learn prayers, about the faith (including Saints and Feast Days), and Bible reading as a family.
P ~ Church History and Vocation Discernment following Catholic Heritage Curricula’s lesson plans for 8th grade (started last year, but did not get far.)  Undecided upon 9th grade catechism.
R ~ Exploring the Mass (never got around to starting last year); Faith & Life 6
D ~ Faith & Life 3; Learn the Rosary utilizing CHC Grade 3 Lesson Plan supplemental material
Science
All boys ~ Supercharged Science (kit and eScience materials) for physical science studies; Also, learning about electricity with Snap Circuits.
P ~ Prentice Hall’s Physical Science in Action book (possibly utilizing Kolbe Academy’s lesson plans)
R and D ~ Real Science 4 Learning Level 1 physics, chemistry and biology; In the Hands of a Child science lapbooks as match their interest
Social Studies (History and Geography)
P ~ half year Alaska history course & Integrated Social Studies using Academic Decathlon materials
R ~ either From Sea to Shining Sea (CHC 5th grade American history) or All Ye Lands (CHC 6th grade World History)
D ~ Communities program from Prentice Hall
Supplemental Classes
Art
Atlier Level 4.
Foreign Language
Entire family ~ Latin studies with Visual Latin and Latin for Children Level A
R ~ The Great Commission Spanish 1; Mango (online)
P ~ possibly Spanish I (materials undetermined.)

D and J ~ Speekee!
Music
Music Theory and Piano instruction from mom with supplementation with handbells at times.
Physical Education
All boys will participate in family activities (e.g. hikes) and co-op classes. Additionally, they can take  lessons as long as mom is willing to drive them. Possibly ice skating and skiing during the winter, too.
