It was about 2 years ago that Apologia began to expand beyond science books. And, this year, some of us on the TOS Crew were given the opportunity to review one of their latest publications, Good Morning, God.
Written by Davis Carman, President and owner of Apologia, and illustrated by Alice Ratterree, this is a sweet book for young children that walks them through a child’s life for each day of the week. It was written with the idea of sparking a love of God from sunrise to sunset in the child with a prayer for each day to help guide the child to develop a relationship with Jesus.
While it can be read strictly as a story, you can also utilize the discussion questions (grouped by day of the week) at the back of the book to prod your child to think more about how THEY can relate to the characters in the story. A few of the days have activities (e.g. specific scripture to read or art work to do) as well.
Overall, I found it to be a lovely book for most Christians. There was nothing that sent up a red flag for our family which interfered with our Catholic faith, although some of the wording is not as familiar to the boys. (Specifically, we do not usually talk about worshiping God through our actions. However, I found it a good starting off point for discussion with the boys.) I did adore how the illustrations painted a very wholesome family life as you follow the young child’s days.
Good Morning, God retails for $14 and can be purchased directly from Apologia. From that page, you can also preview part of the text to get a sense of writing style. In addition, Apologia is offering a coloring book to accompany Good Morning, God for $4.
