Today I am thankful that the Liturgical Year has begun with the start of Advent yesterday.
I took some time yesterday evening to dig out the Advent wreath so we can participate in that tradition of prayer while counting down to Christmas. I am also planning to attend a parish wide Advent night of reflection on Thursday.
Beyond just Advent, I am so thankful to have seasons throughout the Liturgical year. Advent and Lent both provide time for us to turn inward and prepare ourselves for the joyous holidays of Christmas and Easter. In our parish, the lights are being kept lowered during Advent as a reminder of our waiting for the Light to arrive. With the days getting shorter and sunrise getting later, this is an easy thing to enact here.
Last year, Advent seemed to pass with little acknowledgement by me. Things were so crazy between having a newborn, healing from surgery, and preparing to pack out immediately after Christmas. This year, I hope to savor the season a little more and grow in holiness in the process.
