Today I am thankful for online banking and bill paying!
Mr. O is still a little skeptical about the whole process, but I have to say it is great to have the ability to either pre-schedule a payment, check on a balance or make a payment on the due date and not get a late fee. Saving money on stamps is nice, but as we do not have unlimited internet up here it feels like most everything we do online has a cost. Although, it’s probably less than the 44 cents (or is it more now??) per stamp.
Sadly, we have a few bills that do NOT have online bill paying. Or, should I say, you can pay your bill online and really pay for the convenience. The gas company uses a second party that charges around $4 for transactions from your checking account or $5 for credit card payments. I understand there’s a cost to credit card transactions, but this does not give me warm, fuzzy feelings for this utility company. Our phone/internet/TV company takes both forms of online payment at no charge as does our electric company. I did find out that I can pay the bill in cash with a lower transaction fee at our local Wal-mart. That’s come in handy when the due date is sneaking up on me and I forgot to pop the check in the mail.
As for online banking, I will confess to not using it nearly as often these days. I still go up to check periodically and make sure things have cleared. But, unlike the joy I get from seeing my scale numbers go down, I do not want to see the bank numbers go down. I am known, however, to check our credit cards (Discover and the AmEx for Costco) on a more regular basis to keep our spending in check.
