2010 Gratitude Challenge ~ Day 15

Day 15, so half way through the challenge this month.

Today I am grateful that homeschooling is an option for our family.

I recognize that homeschooling is not always allowed outside of the United States and that even within our nation there are locations with so many hoops to jump through that it is difficult to homeschool.

Rather than hijack this post with a comparison of homeschooling in the different states we’ve called home, I’ll add that discourse to a future post list that I have running.

I will say that I am very grateful that we have the ability to register through a charter school here.  For our family, we selected IDEA.

I’m not even go to elaborate on all the reasons why we selected or continue to align with IDEA.  Instead, I’ll share a bit about a recent enrichment morning they had available to families in the Anchorage area.

Contact teachers pulled together a short Jeopardy session where kids selected from categories which included math and vocabulary.  After the session, the families had an hour to select from several different game options.  Each table had a different game with a laminated sign telling the age range, how many could play at once, and a brief synopsis.  Another contact teacher had a story time area set up with living math books.

R and D had fun playingBlokus and are now adding that to their list of games to get for our house.  While not a straight ‘math’ game, it does tap into logic and spatial perception.

J decided to check out the story time area for a while. But, he then did as most toddler do and started exploring the room.

Now I’m thinking not only about getting more game time scheduled into our homeschool, but trying to set up a game afternoon for homeschoolers in the area.  We attended a monthly game afternoon at the library when we lived in Maryland.  The boys usually enjoyed those afternoons. Not only did they get ‘socialization time’ and an introduction to new games, but the mom’s got their own socialization time as well.

  1. It looks like everyone had a good time. I love when they are having fun and learning at the same time.
