I remember sitting for several advanced placement (AP for short) tests back in high school. What’s not to love about taking a test and possibly getting that college level class ‘covered’ before you even get to college?
I guess a LOT of future college students feel the same way as around 3 million AP tests are taken every year.
It should be no great surprise to find products out there to help you prepare for the tests. Compared to what I had to ‘prep’ with (maybe a sample test and big thick book to help guide you?), the new Light Speed learning videos geared for the AP tests present a more high-tech option for preparation.
Light Speed from Standard Deviants
When this review was done, they had four different AP exam prep products under the Light Speed brand. Writing (English Language & Comprehension), History of the US, US Government and Politics, and Chemistry. They have now added MANY more options.
The name Light Speed should give you a clue as to how everything is presented. Things do move at a quick pace on this DVD with just the key points you need to know about how to approach the test being presented. After a while, your head might start spinning. So, it might be best for the student to watch a little and then take the time to digest what they’ve heard.
Curious as to what it looks like? Here’s a video sampler for the writing one pulled from the Cerebellum Corporation website:
Along with the video component, there is a CD with a workbook on it that breaks it all down for you. Lesson plans, worksheets, and quizzes coupled with the DVD should have most students fully armed with the knowledge of how to best tackle the different components of the AP test.
A Few Thoughts on this Resource
Since the boys are not quite ready to take the AP tests, this particular product was reviewed by me and will be held onto for the future. Although, I just might have my eldest son take a peek and see if the lighting speed through tips on pulling your essays together can help inspire him in his writing IN high school. Most of the tips in the areas of critical thinking, writing and analysis can easily be applied in work besides taking this particular test.
As always, you can read what other TOS Crew mates are saying about Cerebellum / Standard Deviants on the TOS Homeschool Crew page. Our family was provided with a copy of Light Speed Writing: AP English Language & Comp. Exam Prep in exchange for our review. No other compensation was provided to me and the opinions expressed in the review are my own.
